How to Properly Use Wago Connectors vs. Wire Nuts

Lever-style connectors, popularized by the brand Wago, have become a common alternative to the twist-on wire nut in Toronto and GTA electrical work. Both are legitimate, code-accepted connection methods when used correctly — but they are not interchangeable in every situation, and each has a distinct correct technique. This guide covers how to use both properly and when one makes more sense than the other.

How to properly use Wago connectors vs. wire nuts

Wago lever connectors (commonly the 221 series) clamp a stripped, straight-inserted conductor under a spring-loaded lever with no twisting required, and they accept mixed conductor gauges and types (solid and stranded) in the same connector. Traditional wire nuts require conductors to be twisted together (or aligned per the manufacturer) and the nut turned clockwise until snug. Both are listed connectors accepted under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code — the right choice depends on the job, not a blanket rule.

How to use a Wago lever connector correctly

  1. Kill power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
  2. Strip each conductor to the exact length marked on the connector body (usually printed directly on the plastic, typically 9–12 mm).
  3. Open the lever fully to the raised position.
  4. Insert the stripped conductor straight into the port until it seats against the internal stop.
  5. Close the lever firmly — you should feel and often hear it click into the locked position.
  6. Tug gently on each conductor to confirm it is clamped and does not pull free.
  7. Repeat for each additional conductor in the connector.

No twisting, no pre-forming the conductors, and the connector can be reopened and reused if a mistake is made — a genuine advantage over a wire nut, which is generally discarded once seated.

How to use a wire nut correctly (recap)

  1. Strip conductors to the length the manufacturer specifies, typically 1/2 to 5/8 inch.
  2. Align ends flush, pre-twist per the connector’s instructions if required.
  3. Select the correctly sized nut for the conductor count and gauge.
  4. Turn clockwise until firmly seated, with the conductor jacket visible just below the nut’s skirt.
  5. Tug-test each conductor.

Where lever connectors have a real edge

  • Mixed solid and stranded conductors. Lever connectors handle this combination more reliably than most wire nuts.
  • Tight device boxes. No twisting motion needed inside a cramped box, which reduces the risk of disturbing adjacent connections.
  • Frequent rework during a project. Reopening a lever connector to add or remove a conductor is trivial; redoing a wire nut means discarding it and starting fresh.
  • Visual verification. Many lever connectors are translucent, letting you see the stripped conductor is fully seated.
  • Retrofit and troubleshooting work where connections may need to be checked or adjusted again later.

Where wire nuts remain the practical default

  • Cost at volume. Wire nuts are cheaper per connection on large jobs with many splices.
  • Familiarity. Every licensed contractor and every inspector in Ontario has decades of comfort with wire nut installations.
  • Larger gauge conductors. Larger wire nut sizes handle heavier gauge combinations that some lever connector series do not cover.
  • Standard residential branch circuit splicing where box fill space for the bulkier lever connector body is a consideration.

  • Stripping too short or too long relative to the printed gauge mark, leaving insulation trapped in the clamp or bare copper exposed outside it.
  • Not fully closing the lever, leaving a partial (weak) clamp.
  • Inserting a stranded conductor with loose flyaway strands that miss the clamp.

Wire nut mistakes:

  • Wrong size nut for the conductor bundle.
  • Uneven strip lengths leaving one conductor short of full engagement.
  • Reusing a nut that has already been fully seated once.

Are lever connectors accepted for Ontario ESA inspections?

Yes, when the specific connector is CSA-listed for the conductor type, gauge, and location (dry versus damp rated). Ontario inspectors routinely pass properly installed lever connector splices — the requirement is the same as for any listed connector: correct product for the application, correctly installed per the manufacturer’s instructions.

For a brand-new whole-circuit install with no rework expected, wire nuts remain just as fast and slightly cheaper. Neither is universally better — pick based on how much you expect to touch that connection again before the wall closes up.

Can I mix Wago and wire nuts in the same box?

Yes. Each splice is independent; there is no code restriction on using different listed connector types in the same box.

Are Wago connectors more expensive?

Per connection, yes, typically. For a project with a lot of rework, the time saved often offsets the material cost.

Can Wago connectors handle aluminum wire?

Standard 221-series connectors are not rated for aluminum-to-copper transitions. Use a listed aluminum-specific connector like AlumiConn instead.

Do lever connectors work outdoors?

Only models specifically rated for damp or wet locations. Standard indoor connectors are not weatherproof.

Can I reuse a lever connector after opening it?
