The humble wire nut (Marrette in some Ontario circles, twist-on wire connector in the catalog) is the connector holding together most residential wiring in the GTA. Used correctly, it is boring and reliable. Used incorrectly, it is the number one cause of the loose connections that show up years later as hot outlets, tripped breakers, and burnt boxes. This guide covers how to size, install, and verify a wire nut properly in a Toronto or GTA home.
How to use a wire nut correctly
Strip each conductor to the length the wire nut manufacturer specifies (typically 1/2 to 5/8 inch), align the ends flush, twist the conductors together clockwise a few turns with linemen’s pliers (or per the connector’s instructions), install a wire nut sized for the conductor count and gauge, and turn clockwise until firmly seated. Give each conductor a firm tug to verify it does not pull out. Wrap electrical tape at the base only if the manufacturer or the Ontario Electrical Safety Code for the specific installation requires it — most modern wire nuts do not require tape.
Choose the right size wire nut
Wire nut manufacturers colour-code their products by capacity. The exact colour-to-size mapping varies by brand, but a typical residential lineup looks like:
Grey / small blue: two 22-gauge conductors, low-voltage only.
Orange: two to three 18–14 gauge conductors.
Yellow: two to four 18–12 gauge conductors, typical for two 14-gauge pigtails.
Red: two to four 12–10 gauge conductors, common for larger pigtails.
Grey (large): multiple 8-gauge or larger, less common in residential.
Green: ground-only, sometimes with a hole for a tail to pass through.
Purple (AlumiConn) and specialty: aluminum-to-copper transitions.
Always match the wire nut to the manufacturer’s chart on the packaging. The right size grips firmly with the correct number of turns. Wrong size either spins or bottoms out.
Step-by-step: correct installation
Kill power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
Strip each conductor to the length the wire nut manufacturer specifies. Typically 1/2 to 5/8 inch.
Align the ends flush. Do not stagger.
Pre-twist the conductors clockwise two or three turns using linemen’s pliers, then trim so all ends are even. (Some pre-twist styles are required, some are optional depending on the connector — read the packaging.)
Install the wire nut and turn clockwise firmly by hand until the spring inside seats and the conductor bundle is fully engaged. You should see about 1/4–1/2 turn of the wire skirt visible below the base of the nut.
Verify by tugging each conductor firmly. None should pull loose.
Wrong size nut. Too small, cannot grip. Too large, spins loose. Bench-check by pulling on each conductor — if any moves, replace with the correct size.
Uneven strip lengths. One conductor bottoms out, another sticks out too far. Trim so all ends match.
Insufficient pre-twist. Some wire nut styles rely on pre-twist to grip. Skipping it produces marginal joints.
Over-twist. Copper work-hardens and can break inside the nut.
Mixing solid and stranded conductors incorrectly. Not every wire nut is listed for the combination. Check the packaging.
Bare copper visible below the skirt. Trim, re-strip, and re-install with correct length.
Aluminum in a copper-only nut. Never acceptable. Use a listed aluminum-to-copper connector (AlumiConn or equivalent). See is aluminum wiring dangerous in a house.
Reused wire nut. Once a nut has been fully seated on a bundle, discard and use fresh on the next joint.
Overfilled box. Wire nuts increase effective conductor volume. Larger nut means more space needed.
When to tape
Modern residential wire nuts are largely designed to be used without tape. Some installers tape the base as extra insurance. Others do not, and there is no code requirement to tape a properly-seated modern wire nut in a typical dry indoor location.
Tape is warranted when:
The manufacturer’s instructions specify it.
The installation is in a damp or vibration-prone location.
The joint is being installed with an older or budget wire nut that lacks a modern skirt design.
Local practice or company standard calls for it.
Never use tape as a substitute for a properly-sized and properly-seated wire nut.
Wire nuts versus lever connectors (Wago)
Lever-lock connectors (Wago is the best-known brand) are now widely accepted in residential wiring and are used interchangeably with wire nuts on most jobs. They insert without pre-twist, accept mixed conductors easily, and are trivially reopenable. Wire nuts remain cheaper per connection and are still the default for many contractors, but the choice is largely preference and job-specific.
Both connectors must be listed and installed per manufacturer instructions. Both are subject to the same OESC rules for box fill, conductor count, and torque.
Warning signs of a bad wire nut connection
Warm outlet or switch faceplate under normal load.
Burnt smell at a device box.
Flickering lights on the affected circuit.
Discolouration on the wire nut or scorching visible through the shell.
The single most common wire nut failure we correct in the GTA is a yellow nut trying to grip four conductors of 12-gauge — near the max spec but with just enough slop that a couple of conductors are loose. The right answer is either a bigger red nut sized for four 12-gauge, or splitting the joint into two smaller ones. If you are ever unsure whether the nut you are holding fits the bundle in front of you, err on the bigger side and verify with a tug test. A five-cent extra part heads off a burnt outlet or a hot box five years later.
