    How to Seal Conduit Entering the Breaker Box

    Conduit entering an electrical panel is a common path for moisture, insects, and even snow to reach the inside of the enclosure. Sealing those entries is a small job with a big impact on panel longevity and safety. This guide covers when sealing is required, which materials are approved, and how it is done properly in a Toronto or GTA home.

    How to seal conduit entering the breaker box

    Conduit entering an electrical panel from an outdoor, unheated, or damp space must be sealed at the panel end to prevent air, moisture, and pest infiltration. The correct sealant is listed duct seal (a soft, non-hardening putty) or a listed conduit-sealing fitting for the specific conduit type. Sealing happens on the interior side of the panel where the conduit terminates, ideally combined with a proper bushing at the enclosure entry. Panel work is licensed-contractor territory in Ontario in most cases — the Ontario Electrical Safety Code spells out the required sealing approach.

    Why unsealed conduit is a problem

    • Moisture migration. Warm indoor air flows out through the conduit in winter, hits cold outdoor pipe, condenses, and drips back into the panel. Over time this causes corrosion on the bus bar, breakers, and terminations.
    • Pest entry. Rodents and insects follow conduit runs into warm dry enclosures. See can mice chewing wires cause a fire.
    • Airflow into the enclosure carries dust and lint that build up on live components.
    • Water entry from outside. Wind-driven rain, snow melt, and sprinkler spray find unsealed conduits fast. See can water get inside an outdoor breaker box.
    • ESA inspection failure. Unsealed conduit from outdoor or unheated spaces is a code defect on any new installation.

    Which conduits require sealing

    Not every conduit needs a sealant plug. Focus on:

    • Conduit entering the panel from outdoors.
    • Conduit passing between heated and unheated spaces (indoor panel with conduit going out to a shed or a detached garage).
    • Conduit passing through a wall separating conditioned and unconditioned space.
    • Conduit that terminates in a wet or damp environment (below-grade panels, laundry rooms, mechanical rooms).
    • Any conduit that has visible moisture, ice, or condensation history at the panel end.

    Approved sealants and fittings

    • Duct seal (the classic). A non-hardening putty sold in bricks or pouches, listed for electrical use. Kneadable, remains pliable, and can be removed later for service. Common brand names include Gardner Bender and Ideal.
    • Conduit sealing fittings. For rigid metal conduit (RMC) or EMT in specific installations, listed sealing fittings with an internal sealing compound are used.
    • Weatherproof bushings with integral seals at the exterior end of the conduit combined with duct seal at the interior end.

    Not approved:

    • Silicone caulk, latex caulk, or expanding foam. These harden, shrink, or damage insulation.
    • Electrical tape wrapped around cables at the entry.
    • Household plumbing putty.
    • Random insulation foam or fibreglass stuffing.

    Even a well-intentioned wrong sealant can be an ESA defect and can trap moisture in ways that make the underlying problem worse.

    How the sealing is actually done

    1. Contractor coordinates a safe panel shutdown if the interior of the panel must be worked in.
    2. Verify the conduit is properly bushed at the enclosure entry — no sharp metal contacting the cable jacket or conductors.
    3. Clean out any old sealant, insect debris, or moisture inside the conduit end.
    4. Knead a piece of duct seal to warm it.
    5. Push the duct seal firmly into the conduit end around the conductors, filling the cross-section to prevent airflow.
    6. Confirm the seal is tight but not compressing the cable insulation.
    7. Verify no daylight or airflow passes through when tested with a match or smoke pencil.
    8. Restore the panel and re-energize.

    A properly sealed conduit end lasts years without maintenance. Duct seal can be removed and re-applied if service is needed later.

    Sealing at the exterior end

    For outdoor conduit runs, sealing only at the panel end is not always enough. The exterior end may also need:

    • Weatherproof service head or LB fitting with gasket.
    • Drip loop in the cable to shed water away from the entry.
    • Weep hole at the low point to drain any condensation that gathers.
    • Waterproof compound where the conduit passes through the exterior wall.

    Improperly weatherproofed outdoor conduit is a common source of water intrusion at otherwise well-installed indoor panels. Related: can you bury indoor electrical wire underground.

    Warning signs your conduit is not sealed properly

    • Rust or corrosion visible around the conduit entry on the panel enclosure.
    • Water staining or drip marks on the panel wall.
    • Condensation or frost on the deadfront in winter.
    • Insect or rodent activity in or near the panel.
    • Ice or icicles at the conduit entry.
    • Cold draft from the panel.

    Any of these means the sealing needs to be redone. Do not open the panel yourself — call an ESA-licensed electrician.

    Cost and effort

    • Duct seal brick: $5 to $10 CAD at any electrical supply store, enough to seal many conduit ends.
    • Install time: 5 to 15 minutes per conduit end.
    • Combined with a panel service call: usually included at no extra material cost.

    It is one of the cheapest preventive electrical maintenance tasks you can do on an aging panel, and it dramatically extends its life.

    The single most damaging conduit-entry issue we see in GTA panels is the outdoor conduit run to a detached garage or shed where nobody sealed the panel end. Warm indoor air flows out through the conduit for months, meets cold winter pipe, and drips condensation directly onto the neutral bar. Ten years later the neutral bar is green with copper carbonate, the bond is loose, and the whole panel needs to come out. Fifteen minutes of duct seal at install would have prevented every dollar of that. If you have any conduit running from a heated space to an unheated one, ask your next electrician to check and re-seal the panel end. It is the cheapest life-extension you can buy on an existing panel.
