    How to Pull Wire Through a Conduit Easily?

    Pulling wire through conduit is the difference between a professional-quality electrical run and a frustrating afternoon of stuck cables and shredded insulation. Whether it is a 3-metre run from a subpanel to a first fixture or a 30-metre underground run to a detached garage, the technique is the same and the difference between smooth pulls and painful ones comes down to preparation, lubrication, and the right tools. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to pull wire through a conduit easily, when a helper matters most, and what the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires.

    Short answer: use fish tape or pull string, cable lubricant, and steady tension

    Direct answer: install a pull string or fish tape in the conduit first, attach the wire securely, apply cable pulling lubricant, and pull steadily with a helper feeding cable at the other end. Rushing or jerking the pull is what causes snags and damaged insulation.

    Tools and materials

    • Fish tape (steel or nylon), 15-30 m
    • Pull string (small-diameter nylon) if pre-installed in the conduit
    • Cable pulling lubricant (Ideal Yellow 77, Klein Tools, or equivalent)
    • Electrical tape
    • Wire mesh grip or pulling head for large conductors
    • Helper on the feed end (essential for runs over 5 metres)

    Step-by-step: the pull

    1. Insert the fish tape or pull string from the pull end through the conduit to the feed end.
    2. Attach the cable to the fish tape. Bend the fish tape hook, insert the cable end, wrap tight with electrical tape. Streamline the cable end to slide smoothly through bends.
    3. Apply cable lubricant to the cable and to the conduit entry. Use plenty on longer runs.
    4. Pull from one end while a helper feeds from the other. Steady tension, not jerks. If it stops, back off and diagnose — do not force it.
    5. Watch for hang-ups at conduit fittings. Bends, couplings, and boxes are where cables snag.
    6. Leave enough conductor at both ends for terminations — typically 200-300 mm past the point of exit.

    Techniques for hard pulls

    • Add more lubricant. Sometimes the first application is not enough. Feed lubricant into the pull at the conduit entry as needed.
    • Use pulling grip for multiple conductors. A wire mesh grip (Kellems grip) grips multiple conductors and pulls them together without deforming the ends.
    • Pull in reverse. If the cable is stuck, try pulling it back a few centimetres, then re-lubricating.
    • Add another helper. Long runs benefit from someone pushing at the feed end while the puller pulls.
    • Break the pull into segments. On very long runs, install junction boxes at intermediate points and pull segment by segment.

    Conduit sizing to make pulls easier

    Direct answer: Section 12 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code limits conduit fill — you cannot pack conductors more than 40% of the conduit’s internal cross-sectional area. Under-filled conduit is easier to pull through and leaves room for future additions.

    • 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) EMT: up to 4 x 14 AWG or 3 x 12 AWG conductors.
    • 3/4 inch (19 mm) EMT: up to 7 x 14 AWG or 4 x 12 AWG.
    • 1 inch (25 mm) EMT: up to 12 x 14 AWG or 7 x 12 AWG.

    Oversize the conduit if you plan to add circuits later. The material cost difference is small; the ease of future pulls is significant.

    Common pull mistakes

    • Not using lubricant. Dry pulls damage insulation on bends.
    • Jerking or yanking. Steady tension is faster and safer.
    • Overloading the conduit. Exceeds fill limits and makes future pulls impossible.
    • No pull string for future. Always leave a pull string when the conduit is empty for future additions.
    • Attaching cable to fish tape poorly. Cable pulls off mid-run; the entire pull has to restart.

    Special cases: large conductor sizes

    Direct answer: pulling 6 AWG and larger conductors requires a mechanical pulling machine on longer runs. Manual pulls become impractical past about 15 m with heavy conductor. For subpanel feeders and EV charger circuits, plan for either a shorter conduit run or a pulling machine.
