    How to Fix a Nicked Electrical Wire?

    A nicked electrical wire looks like a small problem — a tiny gouge in the copper conductor from a slipping stripper, a utility knife score, or a pinched cable. In practice, that nick is the origin of every silent wire failure five years from now. Heat concentrates at the defect, insulation weakens, and eventually the conductor breaks or arcs. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to fix a nicked electrical wire, when the fix works, and when the only correct answer is to cut back and re-strip.

    Short answer: cut back and re-strip if possible; otherwise splice with proper connectors

    Direct answer: the correct fix for a nicked wire is to cut off the damaged section and re-strip fresh conductor. If insufficient conductor length remains, splice a fresh piece of the same-gauge conductor onto the nicked wire using a marrette inside a listed junction box. Never wrap electrical tape over a nick and leave it as “repaired.”

    Why nicks matter more than they look

    • Reduced current-carrying capacity. A nick reduces the cross-sectional area of the conductor. Current concentrates through the smaller section, generating heat.
    • Insulation degradation from local heating. Heat at the nick cooks the surrounding insulation, cracking and eventually exposing more copper.
    • Fatigue failure over time. Thermal expansion and contraction at the nick eventually breaks the conductor completely.
    • Arc fault risk. Under high load, a nick can arc briefly — the source of many mystery fires attributed to “electrical” causes.

    The Electrical Safety Authority lists conductor-defect-related failures among residential incidents in the Ontario Electrical Safety Report. Small nicks compound over decades.

    Step-by-step: cut back and re-strip

    1. Kill the breaker feeding the circuit. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
    2. Pull the cable back to expose enough conductor for a re-strip. If enough conductor remains (usually 200 mm inside the box), you can re-strip without adding a splice.
    3. Cut off the nicked section with wire strippers or lineman’s pliers. Cut past the nick by at least 20 mm.
    4. Re-strip the fresh conductor for the terminal. See our post on cutting and stripping wire.
    5. Re-terminate as normal.

    When you cannot cut back: splice in a junction box

    1. Install a junction box where the nicked section is accessible. The junction must remain accessible — not buried behind drywall.
    2. Cut the cable at the nick.
    3. Strip both ends with proper technique.
    4. Splice with marrettes. Same-colour conductors together (black to black, white to white, bond to bond).
    5. Install a blank cover plate.
    6. Label the panel schedule to note the junction box location.

    Buried splices behind drywall are prohibited under Section 12 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Every splice must remain accessible.

    What NOT to do

    • Do not wrap tape over a nick. Tape does not restore conductor capacity.
    • Do not solder the nick. Solder introduces its own failure modes; residential wiring does not use solder joints.
    • Do not bury the repaired section. Splices must be accessible.
    • Do not skip a proper junction box. Free-hanging marrettes in a wall cavity are code violations.
    • Do not ignore small nicks. Even a shallow nick propagates over time.

    When the whole cable needs replacement

    Direct answer: if the nick is in the middle of a long run, if multiple nicks are present, or if the cable has been damaged by chewing, pinching, or heat, replace the entire cable rather than splicing repeatedly. Multiple splices reduce reliability and complicate future troubleshooting.

    Common causes of nicks (and prevention)

    • Wrong-size stripper notch. Using the 12 AWG notch on 14 AWG cuts through the conductor. Use the correct notch.
    • Utility knife stripping. Always nicks. Use a proper wire stripper.
    • Pinched cable during device installation. Fold conductors carefully into the box; do not pinch between yoke and box wall.
    • Fishing damage. Fish tape or rough box entry can nick cable. Use protective bushings and pull carefully.
    • Rodent damage. Mice chew cable jacket exposed in attics or basements. Fix rodent entry points and inspect exposed cable.

    In our experience diagnosing intermittent electrical failures across GTA homes, the most common invisible cause is a nick that happened during the original install decades ago. The device worked fine at inspection; the nicked conductor slowly degraded over 20-30 years until it finally failed. When we cut back and re-terminate, the failure disappears. Homeowners doing their own work can avoid the same trap by using a proper wire stripper with sized notches (see our post on cutting and stripping) and inspecting exposed copper under good light before terminating. Ten seconds of inspection saves a service call in 2050. Same lesson as the torque driver, the multimeter, and the tester battery check — pre-emptive habits eliminate the failure modes that show up years later.
