What Is a Split-Bus Panel?

Open the deadfront on a 1960s or 1970s Ontario panel and you might see something unusual: no big single main breaker at the top, but instead a cluster of large-amperage breakers arranged so that flipping any two or three of them disconnects the whole house. That is a split-bus panel. Once common, now considered outdated, and often the reason a home inspection report flags a panel for replacement. This guide explains what a split-bus panel is, how to identify one, and why it matters in a Toronto or GTA home.

What is a split-bus panel?

A split-bus panel is an older electrical panel design that has no single main breaker. Instead, the panel’s internal bus bar is divided into two sections, and multiple high-amperage breakers at the top of the panel act as the disconnects for the various sections and for the lower-half branch circuits. Under the historic “six-handle rule” in the Canadian Electrical Code, up to six switches could be flipped in sequence to disconnect the entire house. Modern code and the current Ontario Electrical Safety Code require a single main disconnect for new installations, so split-bus panels are legacy equipment.

How to identify a split-bus panel

  • No single big main breaker at the top of the panel.
  • Several large breakers (typically 30, 40, 50, or 60 amps) at the top of the panel that feed dedicated loads (range, dryer, AC) and the lower branch-circuit bus.
  • A visible physical break in the vertical bus bar, dividing the panel into an upper and lower section.
  • The lower section behaves like a separate subpanel, protected by one of the upper breakers labelled “Lighting Main” or “Range/Lighting Main.”
  • Typically found in homes built between the 1950s and mid-1970s.

Why split-bus panels fell out of favour

Modern electrical code has moved to a single-main-disconnect model for good reasons:

  • Emergency shut-off is faster and simpler with one lever than with up to six.
  • Cleaner load calculations. A single main breaker sets a clear capacity ceiling for the whole service.
  • Fewer parts, fewer failure points. Multiple disconnects mean more terminals, more contacts, and more places to develop heat, corrosion, or arcing.
  • Standardized labelling and inspection. A single main breaker is easier to inspect, torque-check, and service.

Existing split-bus panels are not automatically illegal in Ontario, but they are generally considered outdated and are frequently flagged by home inspectors, real estate lawyers, and insurance carriers.

  1. Load calculation to size the replacement service (100, 200, or 400 amp).
  2. Utility coordination for the service drop-off during the swap.
