    Why Are Some Breakers Tied Together With a Handle Tie?

    Open your electrical panel and you might notice two breakers with a small metal or plastic clip locking their handles together. Are they a two-pole breaker? A pair of singles linked for some reason? A DIY move? The answer matters, because handle ties are a specific safety device that Ontario code requires in exact circumstances. This guide covers what a handle tie does, when it is required, and when it is a red flag.

    Why are some breakers tied together with a handle tie?

    A handle tie is a small mechanical link that clamps two adjacent single-pole breaker handles so both breakers switch off together when either one is thrown. It is required whenever two breakers share a neutral, feed the same box, or supply a 240V load, so a technician working on the circuit can safely disconnect all energized conductors with a single motion. It does not necessarily mean both breakers will trip together on a fault — that is a different, stronger link called common trip.

    Handle tie versus common trip: not the same thing

    The two terms are often confused, but they mean different things:

    • Handle tie: A mechanical clip that links two single-pole breaker handles. If you flip one off manually, the other goes off with it. But if only one breaker trips on a fault, the other one may stay on.
    • Common trip (true two-pole breaker): A single molded breaker case containing two poles internally linked so that a fault on either pole trips both simultaneously. This is what a 240V breaker for a dryer or range actually is. See what does a double-pole breaker do.

    For 240V loads like a stove or an EV charger, current OESC generally requires a true common-trip two-pole breaker, not just a handle tie on two singles. Handle-tied singles are typically only used for multi-wire branch circuits sharing a neutral.

    When Ontario code requires a handle tie

    The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires a handle tie or common trip in several scenarios, most importantly:

    • Multi-wire branch circuits (MWBCs), where two 120V circuits share a single neutral conductor. Both breakers must switch off simultaneously so a technician cannot leave one energized while working on the shared neutral.
    • Circuits landing in the same device or box, such as a split-duplex kitchen counter receptacle where the top and bottom halves are on different breakers.
    • 240V branch circuits, which generally require a true two-pole common-trip breaker, though older installations sometimes used handle-tied singles.
    • Two circuits feeding the same yoke or device.

    The reason is safety at the point of work. A technician can flip one handle and know that both hots in the box or device are dead. Without the tie, someone could switch off only one breaker, believe the box is safe, and touch a live conductor from the other circuit.

    The classic Ontario split-duplex example

    Ontario has historically used split-duplex kitchen counter receptacles to give small-appliance loads more capacity. The top half of the receptacle is on one 15-amp breaker and the bottom half is on a second 15-amp breaker, sharing a common neutral. This is a multi-wire branch circuit by definition, and it requires a handle tie linking those two breakers.

    Newer kitchen installations often go with dedicated 20-amp T-slot circuits instead of split-duplex configurations, but any older GTA home with split-duplex receptacles should have handle-tied breakers in the panel.     When you should NOT see a handle tie

    A handle tie should never be used to:

    • Fake a 240V breaker by clipping two random 15-amp singles on opposite phases. Modern OESC requires a listed two-pole common-trip breaker for a 240V branch circuit in most cases.
    • Link two circuits that are not related just to save panel labelling effort.
    • Link two breakers on the same phase (both A or both B). Multi-wire branch circuits require the two hots to come from opposite phases so the shared neutral only carries the difference in current.
    • Bridge across bus positions with a homemade clip. Handle ties must be listed accessories for the specific breaker.

    Any of the above is a code defect and a safety hazard.

    How to identify a real handle tie in your panel

    • Small metal or plastic clip specific to your panel brand (Siemens, Eaton, Square D, Schneider, Cutler-Hammer, and so on).
    • Snaps around the handles of two adjacent single-pole breakers.
    • Listed on the packaging or in the breaker manufacturer’s catalogue as a compatible accessory.
    • Does not merge the breaker cases internally. Each single-pole breaker still has its own body and mechanism.

    A true two-pole common-trip breaker has a single molded body that occupies two slots and one integrated handle. The difference is visible at a glance once you know what to look for.

    What to do if your panel is missing required ties

    1. Do not open the deadfront yourself. Panel work is licensed-contractor territory.
    2. Book an inspection with an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor.
    3. The contractor will identify multi-wire branch circuits and split-duplex receptacles and install proper handle ties or two-pole breakers as required.
    4. Any changes are done under an ESA notification and finalized with a Certificate of Inspection. See what is a Certificate of Inspection.

    Missing handle ties is a common defect on older panels and one of the easier ones to fix.

    The safety story behind the rule

    Handle ties exist because of a subtle but serious hazard: a shared neutral in a multi-wire branch circuit will safely carry the imbalance between the two circuits when everything is normal. But if only one breaker is switched off and the other remains live, the shared neutral is now carrying the full return current of the still-live circuit, and any technician who touches the neutral while working on the “dead” circuit gets a shock.

    The handle tie forces both breakers off together, eliminating that failure mode. It is a small piece of hardware with an outsized safety impact.

    Expert tip from our ESA-licensed electricians

    Every time we open a panel in an older GTA home with a split-duplex kitchen, we check the two breakers feeding those counter receptacles. In a surprising number of cases the handle tie has fallen off, was never installed, or was replaced during a previous panel swap and never restored. The circuit still works, so nobody noticed. If your kitchen counter has split-duplex receptacles (the top and bottom halves of one outlet on different circuits) and you have never had a licensed contractor verify the breakers are properly tied, add it to your list. It is a five-minute fix that removes a real shock risk on the next kitchen renovation.
