    How Deep Should a Trench Be for an Electrical Line?

    The single most-asked question when planning a buried electrical run in a Toronto or GTA yard is how deep to trench. The answer is not one number — it depends on the cable or conduit type, the voltage, whether the trench crosses a driveway, and a handful of OESC exceptions. This guide covers the actual trench depth numbers for residential Ontario electrical lines, the reasoning behind them, and how to plan for a first-time-pass ESA inspection.

    How deep should a trench be for an electrical line?

    For a typical residential 120/240V circuit in Ontario, the minimum cover the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires depends on the wiring method: direct-burial cable (NMWU or equivalent) generally needs about 600 mm (24 inches) of cover, cable in PVC conduit generally needs about 450 mm (18 inches), rigid metal conduit is often permitted at shallower depths, and some GFCI-protected 120V circuits at 20 amps or less qualify for reduced-cover exceptions. Under a driveway or roadway, deeper cover is required. Always confirm the exact depth for your project with an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor before you dig.

    Approximate minimum depths for common residential methods

    Rounded to typical residential residential-scale numbers:

    • Direct-burial cable (NMWU, UF), no conduit: ~600 mm cover.
    • Cable in PVC (rigid schedule 40 or 80) conduit: ~450 mm cover.
    • Cable in rigid metal conduit (RMC): often permitted at ~150–300 mm depending on the specific installation.
    • Reduced cover for a 120V, 20-amp or less, GFCI-protected residential branch circuit: some exceptions allow shallower depths, subject to OESC conditions.
    • Under a driveway: increased cover required, often 600–900 mm or with rigid conduit at less depth.
    • Under a public road: even greater cover, with utility coordination.

    Why depth matters

    • Protection from digging. Sufficient cover means a shovel, a fence post auger, or a garden bed excavation is unlikely to hit the cable.
    • Frost protection. Ontario frost depth in the GTA can reach 1.2 m. Deeper cover reduces mechanical stress from freeze-thaw movement.
    • Ground disturbance from vehicles. Under a driveway the load path pushes soil movement deeper than under a lawn.
    • Erosion tolerance. Sloped yards can lose soil over decades. Depth builds in a margin.
    • Regulatory clarity. Standardized depths let inspectors verify quickly.

    Cover versus trench depth

    The code talks about “cover” — the distance from the top of the cable or conduit to the finished ground surface. Trench depth is usually deeper than the cover because you also need a sand bed under the cable, room for warning tape, and clearance for backfill. A 600 mm cover typically means a trench dug to roughly 700–750 mm to accommodate the bed and the cable itself.

    Additional trench requirements

    • Sand or fine-soil bedding. A 50–150 mm bed of clean sand cushions the cable and prevents rock damage.
    • Warning tape. Bright yellow or red plastic tape labelled “Caution Buried Electric Line” installed above the cable, typically 150–300 mm below finished grade. Required in specific configurations and a good idea in all of them.
    • Mechanical protection at transitions. Rigid conduit or a sleeve where the cable emerges from the ground.
    • Weatherproof service head or LB fitting at above-ground exits.
    • Drip loop where the cable enters a service head to shed water.
    • Bond and ground at both ends.

    Under driveways, walkways, and gardens

    • Under a concrete driveway: more cover required and typically installed in rigid conduit for mechanical protection.
    • Under a paver walkway: depth may match driveway requirements depending on load and reinstatement.
    • Under a garden bed: standard cover is usually sufficient but consider depth of future digging.
    • Under a deck: installers often route through the joist bay of the deck rather than burying directly under it.
    • Along a fence line: keep clear of post-hole locations, which are the most common shovel-strike location.

    Locate before you dig

    Ontario law requires that Ontario One Call be contacted before any digging so public utilities can be marked. Free service, quick turnaround, and required for both DIY and contractor projects. Private locates (invisible fence, irrigation, private hydro, septic) are separate and usually a homeowner responsibility.

    Trench dimensions and safety

    • Width: narrow enough to reduce spoils, wide enough for the cable or conduit and safe hand-placement.
    • Walls: deeper trenches (over 1.2 m) may require shoring for worker safety.
    • Spoils placement: keep spoils at least 500 mm back from the trench edge.
    • Drainage: avoid trenching in standing water; pump if needed.
    • Restoration: compact backfill in lifts to prevent later settlement.

    Common ESA inspection findings on buried runs

    • Insufficient cover at any point along the run.
    • Cable type not rated for direct burial.
    • Missing warning tape.
    • No mechanical protection where cable emerges from grade.
    • Improper conduit type or joint sealing.
    • Cable damaged during backfill (rock strikes, tight bends).
    • Missing GFCI protection on wet-area or outdoor terminations.

    The single biggest trenching mistake we correct in GTA yards is under-depth at the transition points — the trench is at proper depth in the middle of the run, but ramps up too quickly to reach the service head or shed entry, leaving cable within a few inches of the surface at each end. Frost heave and shovel strikes both concentrate exactly there. When you plan the trench, hold full-depth cover all the way to the vertical rise, and use a listed sweep or elbow to transition rather than a gradual ramp. Small install-time discipline that saves years of trouble.
