Poking around inside a device box in an older Toronto or GTA home, homeowners sometimes find both 12-gauge and 14-gauge cables landing on the same terminals. That combination raises a specific question: is it legal, safe, and what does it mean for the breaker on that circuit? Yes, but only if the breaker protecting the circuit is sized for the smallest conductor on that circuit. Under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, a circuit that contains any 14-gauge wire anywhere in the run must be protected by a maximum 15-amp breaker — even if the rest of the circuit is 12-gauge and the breaker upsize would otherwise be legal. The wire gauge and the breaker rating always match the weakest link in the chain. Mixing gauges without downsizing the breaker is a code defect and a real fire risk.
Breakers protect conductors from overheating. Each cable gauge has a maximum ampacity beyond which the copper heats up and the insulation degrades. If a 20-amp breaker feeds a circuit that has a 14-gauge conductor anywhere in it, the 14-gauge conductor can carry up to 20 amps continuously before the breaker trips — well above its 15-amp rating. Over time the 14-gauge cable overheats, insulation ages, and the risk of a fault or fire in that segment rises.

Downsizing the breaker is faster, cheaper, and always code-compliant. The downstream consequence is that the circuit now trips more easily under load. If it was tripping before the upsize, expect it to trip again after the downsize. The correct answer is either to redistribute load off that circuit or to add a new dedicated 20-amp circuit on new 12-gauge cable for whatever pushed the original circuit past its rating.
