    How to Tell What Gauge Wire Is in My Wall?

    Identifying the gauge of wire hidden in the wall is one of the most common questions on GTA renovation projects. The right gauge determines whether a circuit can handle a new dishwasher, an EV charger, or an extra kitchen counter receptacle. Guessing wrong risks overloading the wire and starting a fire. This guide walks Ontario homeowners through how to tell what gauge wire is in your wall, three practical methods that work on real installations, and when the answer requires a licensed electrician’s meter or a caliper.

    Short answer: read the cable jacket, check the breaker, or measure the conductor diameter

    Direct answer: the fastest way is to read the printing on the outer cable jacket at any accessible point — usually in the basement, attic, or inside a box with the device removed. The jacket prints the gauge every 300 mm (“14/2 NMD-90” or “12/3 NMD-90”). If you cannot see the jacket, check what breaker the circuit is on (14 AWG on 15 A, 12 AWG on 20 A) or measure the conductor diameter directly with a wire-gauge tool.

    Method 1: read the cable jacket

    1. Kill the breaker feeding the target circuit.
    2. Remove the switch or receptacle to expose the cable entering the box.
    3. Look at the jacket marking. It reads something like “14/2 NMD-90 CU” — meaning 14 AWG copper, two conductors plus bond.
    4. If the marking is worn away, follow the cable back to the panel or an accessible junction where the marking is fresh.

    The jacket marking is the definitive answer. Always trust it over any indirect measurement.

    Method 2: match to the breaker

    • 15 A breaker: 14 AWG copper conductor.
    • 20 A breaker: 12 AWG copper.
    • 30 A breaker: 10 AWG copper.
    • 40 A breaker: 8 AWG copper.
    • 50 A breaker: 6 AWG copper.

    This method assumes the original installer sized the breaker to the wire. If a previous owner replaced a 15 A breaker with a 20 A on 14 AWG wire (a common and dangerous shortcut — see our post on breaker size vs wire), the breaker will not match. Verify with method 1 or 3.

    Method 3: measure the conductor diameter

    • 14 AWG copper: 1.63 mm diameter (0.064 inch).
    • 12 AWG copper: 2.05 mm (0.081 inch).
    • 10 AWG copper: 2.59 mm (0.102 inch).
    • 8 AWG copper: 3.26 mm (0.128 inch).
    • 6 AWG copper: 4.11 mm (0.162 inch).

    Use a caliper or a purpose-built wire gauge tool (Klein Tools sells one for $8). Strip a short length of the insulation to get an accurate measurement — the insulation adds to the overall diameter.

    When the wire is aluminum

    Direct answer: aluminum conductors are physically larger than copper for the same current rating. Aluminum 12 AWG is approximately the diameter of copper 10 AWG. The jacket marking always specifies whether the cable is copper (“CU”) or aluminum (“AL”). Do not treat aluminum measurements as if they were copper.

    Common gauge mistakes

    • Assuming the breaker size matches the wire. Verify visually.
    • Mistaking 14/3 for 12/2. The 14/3 has a red conductor and is still 14 AWG.
    • Reading the jacket marking incorrectly. The first number is the gauge; the second is the number of insulated conductors. “14/3” means three 14 AWG conductors plus bond.
    • Not accounting for stranded conductors. Stranded conductor of same AWG has slightly larger overall diameter than solid. Measure with strands compressed together.

    In our experience diagnosing add-on circuits across GTA renovations, the single most common gauge mystery is the kitchen or laundry circuit that appears to be 14 AWG but is on a 20 A breaker. Homeowners want to add a load and check the breaker to size it; they see 20 A and assume the wire is 12 AWG. On many older installations, a previous handyman upsized the breaker on 14 AWG wire, creating a code violation and a fire risk. Always verify the wire gauge at the box before adding load.
