How to Troubleshoot a Tripped GFCI That Won’t Reset

A GFCI receptacle that trips and will not reset — or that resets briefly and trips again immediately — is one of the most common electrical service calls in Ontario homes. The behaviour is often misread as a faulty GFCI device, but in most cases the GFCI is doing exactly what it is designed to do: detecting a ground fault or a wiring error and cutting power to prevent a shock hazard. Diagnosing the actual cause requires a systematic approach rather than simply replacing the GFCI.

How to Troubleshoot a Tripped GFCI That Won’t Reset

Before starting: the reset button on a GFCI receptacle will only latch when the device detects no ground fault on the circuit it is monitoring. If the reset button pops back immediately or will not push in at all, the GFCI is detecting a problem. The diagnostic steps below identify whether the problem is the GFCI device itself, the wiring at the GFCI, or a fault somewhere on the downstream circuit the GFCI is protecting.

Step 1: Identify What the GFCI Is Protecting

A single GFCI receptacle can protect more than just its own face outlets. If the load terminals of the GFCI are used (rather than leaving them unused), the GFCI also monitors and protects all outlets wired downstream from it. This means a GFCI in a bathroom can protect outlets in adjacent bathrooms, a garage, an outdoor location, or other areas on the same circuit — depending on how the wiring is configured.

Check whether any of the following conditions are present before trying to reset the GFCI:

  • Is there an appliance plugged into any GFCI-protected outlet (at the GFCI face or at any downstream outlet) that is wet, damaged, or has a faulty cord?
  • Is there an outdoor outlet, a bathroom outlet, or a garage outlet that has water intrusion or moisture inside the box?
  • Has a new appliance recently been plugged in that has never been used on this circuit before?

Step 2: Unplug Everything and Attempt a Reset

  • Unplug all devices from the GFCI face outlets and from any outlets that may be downstream of this GFCI (check nearby outlets in the same area — test them with a plug-in tester to see which ones lost power when the GFCI tripped).
  • With all appliances unplugged, press the reset button firmly. If it latches, the GFCI is working correctly and the fault was in one of the appliances. Plug appliances back in one at a time to identify which one triggered the trip.
  • If the reset button still will not latch with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring — either at the GFCI itself or downstream in the circuit wiring.

Step 3: Check for Moisture at Outdoor or Wet-Area Outlets

If any outlets on the GFCI-protected circuit are outdoors, in the garage, or in another wet area, inspect each one. Look for:

  • Water inside the outlet box or on the outlet face — this is common after rain if the weatherproof cover has failed or is not correctly sealed
  • Condensation inside the outlet box — can occur when warm humid air from the house meets a cold exterior box in spring or fall
  • Damaged weatherproof covers — cracked covers or covers that do not seal around the plug allow water entry

Allow the box to dry completely (a hair dryer on low heat directed into the open box for several minutes can accelerate drying), then attempt to reset the GFCI. If the GFCI resets and holds after drying, the fault was moisture-related. Replace the weatherproof cover and ensure the box is correctly sealed to prevent recurrence.

Step 4: Check for Line/Load Terminal Reversal

A GFCI wired with line and load connections reversed will not function correctly. When line and load are reversed, the GFCI monitoring circuit is not correctly connected to the incoming power. The reset button may not latch, or the GFCI may appear to reset but will trip immediately when anything is plugged in. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) identifies reversed line/load wiring as one of the most common GFCI installation errors.

To check: with the circuit breaker off, remove the GFCI from the box and check which set of terminals the incoming power wires connect to. The line terminals (labelled LINE on the back of the device) must receive the incoming hot (black) and neutral (white) conductors from the panel side. The load terminals (labelled LOAD) connect to wires going to any downstream protected outlets. If line and load are reversed, swap the connections.

Step 5: Test the GFCI Device Itself

  • With correct wiring and nothing plugged in: If the reset button latches but the test button does not cause a trip, the GFCI’s internal fault-detection mechanism has failed. Replace the device.
  • With a GFCI tester: A plug-in GFCI tester (available at hardware stores) applies a controlled test fault to the outlet face. If the GFCI does not trip when the tester’s test button is pressed, the GFCI has failed and needs replacement.
  • Age of the device: GFCI receptacles have a limited service life — typically 10–15 years. An older GFCI in a bathroom, kitchen, or outdoor location that has tripped repeatedly over its lifetime may simply have worn internal components. Replacement is the appropriate response when an older GFCI repeatedly trips without a clear external cause and does not respond correctly to testing.

Step 6: Inspect the Downstream Circuit Wiring

If the GFCI resets correctly with downstream outlets disconnected but trips when reconnected to the downstream wiring, the fault is in the downstream circuit. Common causes:

  • A failed outlet in the downstream circuit — wiring error or damaged outlet creating a leakage path between hot and ground
  • Damaged wiring in the circuit — insulation worn through by contact with a staple, joist hanger, or sharp metal edge, creating a hot-to-ground leakage path
  • A GFCI-protected circuit that has been extended improperly — a junction box with incorrect wiring that introduces a fault on the protected side

Identifying a fault in downstream fixed wiring requires systematically disconnecting outlets from the circuit (at the breaker, with proper safety precautions) and testing each segment to locate the fault. This work involves handling energized wiring and requires electrical knowledge to do safely. At this point, calling an ESA-licensed electrician is the correct approach if the fault has not been found and corrected through the steps above.

Expert Tip from Our ESA-Licensed Electricians

When we arrive at a service call for a GFCI that will not reset, the first thing we do is locate all the outlets that are downstream of the GFCI and unplug everything from every one of them — including the GFCI face outlets. We then attempt the reset. In about 60% of cases, the GFCI resets immediately, and plugging appliances back in one at a time identifies a faulty appliance as the cause. In the remaining cases, the fault is in the fixed wiring or the GFCI device itself. Line/load reversal accounts for a large portion of those fixed-wiring cases, and it is a five-minute fix once identified. We use a GFCI outlet tester and a non-contact voltage tester for all of this — no guessing, no swapping parts until a cause is confirmed. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) requires that GFCI protection be maintained and functional at all times in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and other required locations — a non-functional GFCI in one of those locations is a code deficiency.
