Can I Use an Indoor Extension Cord Permanently?

Extension cords are sold and marketed as temporary solutions — and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) treats them that way. Using an indoor extension cord as a permanent wiring method is a code violation, a fire hazard, and an insurance risk. Understanding what “permanent” means in this context, and why the distinction matters, helps homeowners make correct decisions about their electrical setup.

Can I Use an Indoor Extension Cord Permanently?

The short answer is no. Extension cords are not approved for permanent use under the OESC, regardless of how heavy-duty the cord is, how it is routed, or Whether it is plugged into a properly rated outlet. The OESC requires that permanently installed wiring use approved wiring methods — NMD-90 cable, conduit, or other approved systems — not extension cords or power bars.

What “Permanent” Means in the OESC

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) treat a connection as “permanent” when it is not regularly removed and reconnected for use with different equipment in different locations. A lamp plugged into an outlet with a short cord that stays connected is a typical appliance connection — not a permanent wiring installation. An extension cord that has been run under a rug, behind furniture, or through a doorway to power a receptacle or appliance that never moves falls into a different category: it is functioning as permanent building wiring, and it does not meet OESC standards for that use.

Why Extension Cords Are Not Rated for Permanent Use

  • Insulation and jacket ratings: Extension cord jackets are rated for exposed, flexible use — fort the heat build-up conditions that occur when cords are run under rugs, through walls, or in confined spaces. A cord under a rug cannot dissipate heat normally, and the insulation degrades faster than it would in open air.
  • No overcurrent protection on the cord itself: The outlet circuit breaker protects the branch circuit wiring, not an extension cord plugged into it. If the extension cord is underrated for the load it carries, the cord can overheat and ignite without tripping the breaker — because the breaker protects the branch circuit wiring, which is heavier than the extension cord.
  • No mechanical protection: Approved building wiring (NMD-90 cable, for example) has a jacket designed to resist abrasion, crushing, and stapling. Extension cords are not designed for or rated under conditions where they are pinched by furniture, walked on, or exposed to abrasion over time.
  • Plug connections are points of failure: A cord plugged into an outlet creates a connection that can loosen over time, especially if the outlet is old or has worn contacts. A worn or loose connection generates heat at the plug — the hotter the connection, the faster it degrades. Permanent wiring makes hard-wired connections that do not have this failure mode.

Common Situations Where Extension Cords Are Used Permanently

The most common permanently-used extension cord situations we encounter in Ontario homes are:

  • Basement workshops where outlets are few and tools are fixed in place — a heavy-duty extension cord runs from a single outlet to a workbench or fixed tool
  • Home offices where a desk and devices were positioned before outlet locations were considered — a power bar or extension cord runs across the room to where the desk ended up
  • Entertainment centres where a single nearby outlet is insufficient for the number of devices — a power bar chain or extension cord provides additional outlets
  • Outdoor features powered from interior outlets — a cord routed through a window, under a door, or through a small gap to reach a patio, garage, or exterior feature
  • Older homes where the electrical system has fewer outlets than moderm usage requires — extension cords fill the gap instead of adding properly permitted outlets

The Correct Solution: Add Properly Permitted Outlets

In every case where a homeowner has been using an extension cord permanently, the correct solution is to have an ESA-licensed electrician add a properly permitted outlet or outlets at the location where power is needed. In Ontario, adding a new outlet requires an ESA permit and inspection. The work involves running new NMD-90 cable from an existing branch circuit (or a new circuit, if the load requires it), installing a proper outlet box, and connecting the outlet to the branch circuit. After inspection, the outlet is code-compliant and safe for permanent use.

The cost of adding one or two outlets is modest compared to the ongoing risk of a permanent extension cord installation — and the cost of a fire or an insurance denial is far greater than either.

Power Bars and Surge Protectors Are Also Not Permanent Wiring

Power bars and surge protectors are cord-connected multi-outlet devices — they have the same OESC status as extension cords when used as permanent wiring substitutes. Plugging one power bar into another (“daisy-chaining”) is a specific violation and compounds the overloading risk. Power bars and surge protectors are appropriate for their intended use: providing multiple outlet positions for equipment in temporary or flexible arrangements. They are not code-approved substitutes for permanent outlets.

Expert Tip from Our ESA-Licensed Electricians

The most common cause of residential electrical fires in Ontario that we see on service calls is an overloaded extension cord or power bar — specifically, one that has been in permanent use for years in a basement, garage, or home office. The cord works for a long time because the overload is not large enough to trip the breaker, but the insulation is degrading and the plug connections are loosening the entire time. By the time a visible problem appears — a warm cord, a discoloured outlet, a burning smell — the cord has often been a hazard for months or years.
