An electrical cord that is hot to the touch is not normal. Cords are designed to carry current with minimal heat generation under normal load — a cord that is noticeably warm indicates that resistance somewhere in the current path has increased beyond its design specification, and the excess energy is being dissipated as heat. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) identifies hot cords and cables as a warning sign of a developing electrical hazard that should be investigated before it results in a fire or shock injury.
A cord that is warm along its length, warm only at one end, or warm at the plug are three distinct symptoms with different causes. Understanding which part of the cord is generating heat points to the specific failure mode — and helps you decide whether the problem is with the cord itself, the outlet, the device, or the circuit.
All conductors have some resistance, and current flowing through resistance generates heat — this is Joule heating, and it is unavoidable. A properly rated cord carrying its rated current generates a small, predictable amount of heat that dissipates into the surrounding air without raising the cord’s surface temperature to a noticeable level. When a cord feels hot, one of three things has happened: the current through it exceeds its rating, the cord’s resistance has increased above its design value, or the cord cannot dissipate heat normally because of how it is installed or positioned.
A cord that is warm from the wall plug to the device end, uniformly, is carrying more current than it is rated for. This is an overloading problem. The causes include:
A cord that is hot at one specific location along its length — while being cooler on either side — has a high-resistance point at that location. This is the most dangerous type of hot cord, because the heat is concentrated, the circuit breaker does not protect against it (the total current draw is below the breaker threshold), and the failure develops at a location that may not be visible. Heat at the plug — where the cord enters the outlet — is almost always a connection problem. The causes include:
Heat at the device end — where the cord enters the appliance — may indicate a problem with the appliance’s internal wiring rather than the cord itself. It may also indicate that the cord’s connection to the appliance has loosened (in detachable-cord appliances) or that the appliance is drawing more current than its rated load due to an internal fault. Have an appliance that makes the cord hot at the device end inspected by a qualified appliance technician before continuing to use it.
Extension cords are disproportionately represented in cord-related fire incidents because they are frequently used in configurations that exceed their ratings. An extension cord used to supply multiple devices through a power strip carries the combined load of all devices through its single wire gauge. If the extension cord’s current rating is lower than the total load, the cord runs warm — and if it runs warm for hours while a device is left on overnight, the sustained heat can degrade the insulation and eventually cause a fire.
Adapters and multi-outlet plugs (sometimes called “octopus” adapters) that plug directly into a wall outlet create the same problem: multiple devices through a single outlet with no cord length to dissipate heat along. The adapter body itself becomes the heat source. If an adapter feels warm, it is carrying more load than it is designed for.
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) requires that all wiring and cords be selected and installed for the loads they carry — a cord’s current rating must equal or exceed the device’s rated current draw. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) identifies warm or hot cords as a warning sign of an overloaded or damaged circuit that should be addressed before it results in a fire or injury. The ESA specifically warns against using extension cords as permanent wiring solutions and against using extension cords rated for lower current than the connected devices require.
If the cord itself is correctly rated for its load and is not coiled or restricted, and it still runs warm, the problem is in the outlet or circuit — not the cord. An outlet that creates heat under load should be inspected by an ESA-licensed electrician. The same applies if:

The pattern we see most often is a homeowner who notices a warm cord and either ignores it or concludes the cord is old and replaces it — without investigating why it is warm. In many cases, the cord is warm because the outlet it is plugged into has worn contacts, and the replacement cord plugged into the same outlet will run warm within days for the same reason. Always test the outlet with a different device and a different cord before concluding the problem is the cord. If multiple devices warm at the same outlet, the outlet needs replacement. In older Toronto homes with original outlets from the 1960s or 1970s, worn outlet contacts are common — the outlet has been inserted and removed thousands of times, the spring contacts have fatigued, and the contact resistance at every plug in that outlet is elevated. Replacing all outlets in a room at once is straightforward work that eliminates a persistent source of resistive heating and fire risk. The cost is modest; the risk of leaving worn outlets in service is not.
