A handle tie is a physical clip or bar that connects two adjacent single-pole breakers so they trip together when either one trips. Handle ties create a two-pole switching and protection function from two single-pole breakers, ensuring that both hot conductors of a 240V or multi-wire circuit are disconnected simultaneously when a fault occurs on either leg.
A true double-pole breaker is a single unit with an internal trip mechanism that guarantees simultaneous trip of both poles under fault conditions — this is the preferred method for 240V circuits. A handle tie on two single-pole breakers provides common-handle operation (both turn on/off together manually) and common trip only if the breakers are listed as a pair for that purpose. For most 240V circuits and all MWBCs in Ontario, verify that the breakers are either a listed double-pole unit or a manufacturer-approved single-pole pair with an approved handle tie.
