Is It Safe to Run a Generator in the Garage with the Door Open?

Running a generator in the garage with the door open is one of the most persistent myths in emergency preparedness — and one of the most deadly. Carbon monoxide (CO) from a running generator does not dissipate safely with an open garage door. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and Health Canada both identify improper generator use as a leading cause of CO poisoning fatalities in Ontario.

Is It Safe to Run a Generator in the Garage with the Door Open?

No. Running a generator in a garage — even with the door open — is not safe. The only safe location for a generator is outdoors, at least 6 metres from any door, window, or vent of an occupied building.

Safe Generator Operation Checklist

  • At least 6 metres from any door, window, or vent
  • On open ground, not under any covering
  • Exhaust directed away from the building
  • Never connect to panel without a transfer switch
  • CO detectors verified functional on all levels
