Running an electrical cord under a rug is one of the most common electrical fire hazards in Canadian homes, and it is also one of the easiest to overlook. The cord is hidden, the room looks tidy, and nothing seems wrong — until heat builds up where no one can see it.

Is It Safe to Cover an Electrical Cord with a Rug?

No. Covering an electrical cord with a rug is not safe. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) both identify cords run under rugs, carpets, and flooring as a recognized fire hazard. The prohibition exists for a specific physical reason: a cord under a rug cannot dissipate heat, and a rug provides the fuel needed for ignition if that heat becomes a spark or sustained arc.

Why Covered Cords Are Dangerous

• Insulation breakdown from sustained heat. Cord insulation is rated for a maximum continuous temperature. When a cord is covered and loaded, that temperature can be exceeded even by moderate use.
• Mechanical damage from foot traffic. Every footstep on a cord under a rug compresses the conductors and breaks internal wire strands over time.
• No visual warning of damage. A damaged cord under a rug is invisible until it arcs or ignites.

Safe Alternatives

• Add a receptacle where you need it. The correct fix is to have an electrician add an outlet closer to where power is needed.
• Use cord covers designed for the purpose. Low-profile floor cord covers protect the cord and allow it to breathe.
• Reroute along the baseboard. Secure with adhesive cord clips — visible and protected from foot traffic.
