How to Install a Generator Interlock Switch

How to Install a Generator Interlock Switch

A generator interlock kit is a mechanical device that attaches to the outside of your main electrical panel and prevents the main breaker and a generator input breaker from being on simultaneously. This ensures the generator cannot back-feed power into the utility grid, which would be dangerous for utility workers restoring service. An interlock kit is a code-compliant, less expensive alternative to a manual transfer switch for homeowners who want to connect a portable generator to selected circuits.

What the Installation Requires

  • A compatible interlock kit for your specific panel model and year — interlock kits are panel-specific and must match the breaker spacing and knockout locations of your exact panel
  • A double-pole breaker in the panel to serve as the generator input breaker, typically 30A or 50A depending on your generator’s output
  • A generator inlet receptacle installed on the exterior of the home — typically a 30A or 50A twist-lock receptacle rated for outdoor use — wired to the generator input breaker in the panel
  • A heavy-duty cord to connect the generator to the inlet receptacle

Why This Requires a Licensed Electrician

Installing a generator interlock involves working inside a live panel — the bus bars are always energized regardless of breaker positions. The installation must be inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) in Ontario and is subject to permit requirements. Incorrect installation can create a back-feed hazard or void your home insurance coverage in the event of a generator-related incident.

EZSMART installs generator interlock kits and inlet receptacles across Ontario, and manages the ESA permit and inspection process. Contact us if you want to connect your portable generator to your home’s electrical system safely and legally.
