Are Extension Cords Safe for Outdoor Use in the Rain?

Only extension cords specifically rated for outdoor use are safe to use outside. Even outdoor-rated cords require that connections be kept dry or protected from standing water. Using an indoor extension cord outdoors — in rain, damp grass, or snow — is a shock and fire hazard. Here is how to identify a safe outdoor extension cord and use it correctly.

How to Identify an Outdoor-Rated Extension Cord

Look for these markings on the cord’s jacket or packaging:

  • “W” designation — a “W” in the cord type code (for example, SJTW or STW) indicates the jacket is rated for outdoor and wet location use
  • “Outdoor” or “For Outdoor Use” — printed directly on the jacket
  • CSA or UL certification mark — confirms it has been tested to Canadian or North American safety standards
  • Heavy, flexible jacket — outdoor cords have thicker, more flexible jacketing than indoor cords and resist cracking in cold weather

Indoor extension cords — typically lighter, with a smooth plastic jacket — are not water-resistant. Water can penetrate the jacket through small abrasions, the connection points, or the ends, creating a path for current to flow to ground or to anyone who handles the cord.

Even Outdoor Cords: Protecting Connections from Water

The most vulnerable point on any extension cord is the connection between the cord and the plugged-in device. Even with an outdoor-rated cord:

  • The connection point between the cord and the tool or appliance must be kept off wet ground — use cord covers, elevate the connection on a dry surface, or use a weatherproof in-use cover
  • Do not allow the connection to sit in pooling water or snow
  • Use a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet — outdoor receptacles in Ontario are required to be GFCI-protected, and this provides critical protection if water does reach the connection

Extension Cords Are Not Permanent Wiring

Extension cords are intended for temporary use. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code prohibits the use of extension cords as a substitute for permanent wiring. Running an extension cord to a regular outdoor use location — a deck, garage, garden shed, or workshop — means the right solution is a permanently installed outdoor outlet or circuit, not a cord left in place indefinitely.

Permanent wiring is safer, eliminates tripping hazards, and is rated for continuous use. An outdoor outlet on a dedicated or extended circuit with GFCI protection is the correct long-term solution.
