What Happens If a Bird Lands on a Power Line?

Birds land on power lines all the time without harm. The reason is simple: electricity requires a complete circuit to flow, and a bird sitting on a single conductor gives it nowhere to go. Understanding why this is safe — and when it is not — also explains why humans must never touch power lines, even from a ladder or a non-conductive tool.

Why Birds Are Safe on a Single Wire

When a bird perches on a single overhead conductor, both of its feet touch the same wire at the same voltage. There is no voltage difference between its feet, so no current flows through its body. For current to flow, there must be a potential difference — a higher voltage point and a lower voltage point connected through a conductive path. A bird on one wire provides no such path.

When Birds Are in Danger

A bird can be electrocuted when it simultaneously contacts two conductors at different voltages, or when it contacts a conductor and a grounded surface (such as a metal pole, transformer housing, or the ground itself). This is more likely to occur with:

  • Large birds — herons, ospreys, eagles, and other large birds have wingspans wide enough to bridge two conductors simultaneously, particularly on distribution poles where conductors are closer together
  • Transformers — birds nesting or landing on transformer housings can bridge the gap between the energized winding and the grounded case
  • Substations — compact equipment spacing increases the likelihood of contact with multiple conductors

This is why utilities install bird guards and perch deterrents on transformers and certain pole configurations — bird-caused outages and wildlife electrocutions are a real operational concern for power companies.

Why Humans Cannot Do What Birds Do

A person touching a power line is almost never in the same situation as a bird on a wire. People are grounded — through a ladder, a tree branch, a roof, or simply by standing on the earth. When a grounded person touches an energized conductor, current flows from the conductor through their body to ground, completing the circuit. The result is electrocution.

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code defines safe approach distances for qualified and unqualified workers. Unqualified persons must maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres from energized overhead distribution conductors. No work, trimming, or contact of any kind should occur within this zone without utility involvement.

What to Do If Power Lines Fall on Your Property

If overhead power lines fall during a storm or following a vehicle collision, treat them as energized and stay well back — at least 10 metres. Call 911 and your local utility immediately. Never attempt to move a downed line or approach a vehicle that has been struck by a line until the utility has confirmed the line is de-energized.
