How Far Must a Hot Tub Be from Overhead Power Lines?

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code specifies minimum clearance distances between hot tubs, spas, and above-ground pools and any overhead electrical conductors. These clearances exist because water is an excellent conductor of electricity, and contact between a power line and a wet surface — or even proximity that allows arcing — can be fatal. Here is what the OESC requires and what you need to know before installing a hot tub.

OESC Clearance Requirements for Hot Tubs and Spas

Under Section 68 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, overhead conductors must maintain minimum clearances from the water surface and the surrounding area of a pool, spa, or hot tub:

  • Vertical clearance above the water surface — a minimum of 4.5 metres (approximately 15 feet) for conductors operating at 750 volts or less (standard residential distribution lines)
  • Horizontal clearance from the water edge — a minimum of 1.5 metres (approximately 5 feet) measured horizontally from the nearest edge of the water surface
  • Higher voltage lines — transmission lines operating above 750 volts require significantly greater clearances; contact your local utility if high-voltage lines are in the area

If an overhead conductor passes within these clearance zones, the hot tub cannot be installed in that location. The conductor must be relocated by the utility or the tub must be positioned elsewhere. You cannot legally install a hot tub under or near power lines that do not meet these clearances.

Hot Tub Electrical Requirements Beyond Clearances

Clearance from overhead lines is only one part of the hot tub electrical installation requirement. The OESC also requires:

  • A dedicated 240-volt, 50- or 60-amp circuit from the electrical panel
  • A weatherproof disconnect switch (disconnect means) within sight of the hot tub and within 3 metres of it, but not within the zone where a person in the tub could reach it
  • GFCI protection for all receptacles within 3 metres of the hot tub
  • Equipotential bonding — a bare copper conductor bonded to the tub shell, pump motor, and other metal components to eliminate voltage differences that could cause shock

Does Hot Tub Wiring Require an ESA Permit in Ontario?

Yes. Hot tub electrical installation is regulated work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. An ESA permit is required for the dedicated circuit, the disconnect, GFCI protection, and bonding. Only a licensed electrical contractor can legally perform this work and pull the required permit.
