Are Frayed Cords Dangerous to Use?

A frayed electrical cord is not a minor inconvenience or cosmetic problem — it is an active electrical hazard. Whether the cord is on a lamp, a kitchen appliance, a phone charger, or an extension cord, fraying exposes the internal conductors to conditions that can cause electrical shock, arc flash, or fire. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) consistently identifies damaged cords as one of the leading causes of preventable residential electrical fires in Ontario.

Are Frayed Cords Dangerous to Use?

Yes. A frayed cord is dangerous and should not be used until repaired or replaced. The word “frayed” covers several overlapping failure modes, and each one carries a specific risk. Understanding which type of damage your cord has and why it matters is the first step toward making the right decision about whether to repair or replace it — and when the answer has to be replacement.

What “Frayed” Actually Means

Cord fraying typically presents in one of three ways:

  • Outer jacket damage: The outer insulating jacket is cut, abraded, or cracked, but the individual conductor insulation underneath is still intact. This is the least severe form, but it exposes the inner insulation to further physical damage and moisture.
  • Conductor insulation damage: The outer jacket is damaged and the insulation on one or more of the individual conductors (hot, neutral, ground) is compromised. Bare or partially bare conductors at this stage can arc to each other, arc to nearby combustible material, or create a shock hazard if touched.
  • Internal strand breaks: The conductor wires inside the cord have broken strands — often from repeated bending at the same point (near plugs or appliance entries). Strand breaks are often invisible from the outside. They create a high-resistance joint that generates heat under load, even when no external damage is visible. A cord that runs warm along its length may have internal strand breaks even if the outer jacket looks intact.

Why Frayed Cords Catch Fire

The two mechanisms behind cord fires are arcing and resistive heating. Arcing occurs when the air gap between two conductors (or between a conductor and a grounded surface) becomes small enough for current to jump across it. An arc carries far more energy than the rated current of the circuit and can reach temperatures exceeding 5,000 degrees Celsius — hot enough to ignite virtually any surrounding material instantly. Resistive heating occurs more slowly. A cord with broken internal strands has a higher resistance at the break point, and the increased resistance dissipates energy as heat. Under sustained load — a lamp left on all night, a charger left plugged in — this localized heating degrades the surrounding insulation further and can ignite the cord jacket or nearby combustibles. A circuit breaker does not protect against this type of failure because the total current draw may be well below the breaker’s trip threshold; the problem is localized, not circuit-wide.

What the OESC and ESA Say About Damaged Cords

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) Rule 4-010 requires that all conductors and cords be installed and maintained in a manner that does not create a hazard. A frayed cord in active use does not meet this requirement. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) explicitly identifies frayed and damaged cords as a fire hazard and recommends that any cord showing damage be removed from service immediately.

The ESA’s guidance is specific: a damaged cord should not be used even temporarily while waiting for a replacement. The risk is not hypothetical — every hour a damaged cord is in use under load is a period during which arcing or besistive heating can cause a fire. “Temporary” use of a known-damaged cord is the scenario that causes most preventable cord fires.

Can You Repair a Frayed Cord with Electrical Tape?

No, not safely. Electrical tape is not a rated repair for damaged cord insulation under the Canadian Electrical Code. Tape applied to a damaged cord does not restore the mechanical integrity of the insulation, does not provide equivalent dielectric strength, and will not prevent arcing if conductor insulation is compromised. Tape also tends to unwind over time, particularly near a heat source or in locations with physical movement. The correct repair for a damaged cord depends on where the damage is. If the damage is at the plug end, a CSA-rated replacement plug can be installed — but this requires cutting the cord back to undamaged insulation, which shortens the cord permanently. If the damage is mid-cord or near the appliance, the entire cord should be replaced. For appliance cords that are not designed for end-user replacement, the appliance itself may need to be serviced or replaced.

Which Cords Are Most Likely to Fray?

The highest-risk cords in a typical home are those subjected to the most movement and mechanical stress:

  • Phone and tablet chargers: Repeatedly coiled, bent, and pulled by the plug. The failure point is almost always at the USB end or where the cord enters the charging brick.
  • Vacuum cleaner cords: Repeatedly wrapped around the body of the vacuum, often with a sharp bend radius. Internal strand breaks are common.

  • Lamp cords on floor lamps: Often pinched under furniture legs or abraded where they contact the floor or baseboard.
  • Outdoor power tool cords: Exposed to UV degradation, temperature cycling, and physical impact — the outer jacket cracks and becomes brittle over time.

When to Replace vs. When to Call an Electrician

If the damaged cord is a detachable appliance cord, replace the cord (or the appliance) and do not involve an electrician. If the damaged cord is hardwired to a fixture or built into the wall — for example, a cord serving a built-in light fixture, a hardwired appliance, or a cord that enters a junction box — contact an ESA-licensed electrician. Hardwired cord damage is not a DIY repair and requires a permit and inspection if the conductor is extended or replaced.

If you find frayed or damaged wiring (not a flexible cord, but fixed building wiring) inside a wall cavity, in the attic, or in the basement, do not attempt a repair. Call an ESA-licensed electrician. Damaged fixed wiring is a condition that requires a permit and inspection to repair legally and safely in Ontario.

Expert Tip from Our ESA-Licensed Electricians

The scenario we see more than any other is a charger or lamp cord that has been in use with visible damage for months before the homeowner takes it seriously. The damage is usually at the most-stressed point — where the cord meets the plug or where it wraps around a furniture leg — and the insulation has been worn through to bare conductor. By the time someone calls us, it is typically because they noticed a burning smell or saw a spark. At that point we are doing a post-incident inspection to confirm nothing caught inside the wall or under a baseboard. The cost of a replacement cord is a few dollars. The cost of a cord fire is total loss. There is no case where continuing to use a frayed cord is a reasonable tradeoff, and there is no repair that a homeowner can perform on damaged conductor insulation that restores it to a safe condition. Replace it.
