    What Is a Pigtail in Electrical Wiring?

    Open a receptacle box in a well-wired Toronto or GTA home and you will often see three or more conductors joined together with a wire nut, plus one short wire coming off the joint to the outlet’s screw terminal. That short wire is a pigtail, and it is one of the small details that separates good wiring from marginal wiring. This guide covers what a pigtail is, why professionals use them, when Ontario code effectively requires them, and how they are done correctly.

    What is a pigtail in electrical wiring?

    A pigtail is a short length of conductor (typically 6 to 8 inches) that connects multiple wires together with a wire nut and then lands the joint on a single device terminal. Instead of daisy-chaining an outlet’s line and load through the receptacle body, a pigtail keeps the circuit continuous through the wire nut and uses the receptacle only as a tap. The result is that removing or replacing the device does not interrupt power to anything downstream, and the device itself is not carrying pass-through current.

    Daisy chain vs pigtail: the practical difference

    Daisy chain (through-the-device wiring): incoming hot lands on one screw terminal of the outlet, outgoing hot lands on the other. All downstream circuit current flows across the receptacle’s internal metal strap. If that strap or terminal fails, downstream outlets lose power.

    Pigtail: incoming hot, outgoing hot, and the pigtail meet inside the box under a wire nut. The pigtail alone lands on the outlet’s screw terminal. Removing the outlet does not interrupt the downstream circuit, and the outlet is not carrying pass-through current.

    Both methods can pass an inspection in most cases, but pigtailing is the pro standard for good reason.

    Why professionals pigtail

    • Downstream circuits stay powered when swapping a device. No unnecessary disruption to other outlets when replacing the one at hand.
    • Receptacle metal strap does not carry pass-through current. Less heat cycling on the device, longer device life.
    • Terminals see one conductor, not two. Simpler, tighter, more reliable terminations.
    • Multi-wire branch circuits are less risky. Removing the device does not break the shared neutral (a hazard on multi-wire branch circuits). Related: why are some breakers tied together with a handle tie.
    • Cleaner wire management inside the box. Easier to fold conductors and set the device.
    • Aluminum wiring homes require pigtails. Standard practice is to pigtail with copper via AlumiConn or CO/ALR devices. See is aluminum wiring dangerous in a house.

    When Ontario code effectively requires a pigtail

    The Ontario Electrical Safety Code and the underlying Canadian Electrical Code do not always mandate the specific word “pigtail,” but there are code-driven situations where pigtailing is the only practical way to meet the rule:

    • Multi-wire branch circuits (MWBCs). The shared neutral must remain continuous when a device is removed. Pigtailing the neutral is the only reliable way.
    • Ground conductors. Ground must be continuous through the box. Pigtailing grounds is standard.
    • Aluminum branch wiring. Pigtailing the aluminum to copper with a listed AlumiConn or similar connector is the accepted remediation method.
    • Three or more conductors of the same type in a box. Devices typically have only two screw terminals per side, so a third or fourth cable requires pigtailing.
    • Backwire holes that only accept one conductor. Multiple conductors require a pigtail to fit on the single terminal.

    How to pigtail correctly

    1. Kill power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
    2. Strip each conductor to the correct length for the connector being used (typically 1/2 to 5/8 inch).
    3. Cut a pigtail from the same-gauge wire, 6–8 inches long.
    4. Align all conductor ends flush.
    5. Twist the conductors together clockwise a few turns using linemen’s pliers, then trim to a uniform length.
    6. Install a listed wire nut of the correct size and colour code for the conductor count and gauge.
    7. Twist the nut clockwise until firmly seated. Give each conductor a gentle tug to verify.
    8. Wrap the base of the wire nut with electrical tape only if the manufacturer or code requires it — many wire nuts do not require tape.
    9. Land the pigtail’s free end on the device’s screw terminal, wrap clockwise, torque to spec.
    10. Fold the pigtail and remaining conductors into the box, set the device, and cover.

    Common pigtail mistakes

    • Undersized wire nut. Nut cannot grip the bundle. Use the correct size for the number and gauge of conductors.
    • Oversized wire nut. Nut spins freely without gripping.
    • Uneven strip lengths. Some conductors are too short and do not seat in the nut.
    • No twist before nut. Some pros pre-twist, some do not — the nut design matters. Follow the manufacturer instruction.
    • Mixing solid and stranded conductors incorrectly. Verify the nut is listed for the combination.
    • Backstab plus pigtail. If you are already pigtailing, land the pigtail on the screw terminal, not the backstab.
    • Aluminum to copper without a listed connector. Regular wire nuts are not rated for aluminum-to-copper. Use AlumiConn or an equivalent listed device.

    Special case: aluminum branch wiring pigtails

    Homes with aluminum branch circuits (typically 1965–1975 Ontario builds) frequently have devices remediated by pigtailing the aluminum conductor to a short copper pigtail, then landing the copper on the device. The industry-standard listed connector for this is AlumiConn (a set-screw connector with anti-oxidant compound). Wire nuts marketed for aluminum-to-copper have a mixed reputation and are best avoided in favour of listed connectors.

    Do you have to pigtail?

    In many situations, no — daisy-chain wiring through a device is legal on a straightforward single-cable-in, single-cable-out setup. In the situations listed earlier (MWBCs, multiple conductors, aluminum, ground continuity), pigtailing is either required or the only clean way to comply.

    Even where not required, pigtailing is generally the mark of quality installation and is what most licensed contractors will default to. If you are hiring, ask the contractor what their standard is.

    In our GTA field data, the single most common outlet failure in a home built after 1975 is a backstabbed daisy-chain that has loosened at the receptacle. The fix is almost always to remove the backstab, add a pigtail with a wire nut, and land the pigtail on the screw terminal. If we could get every homeowner to insist on pigtail-and-screw wiring at every device in every reno, we would replace far fewer burnt receptacles.
