Replace the Panel Without Upgrading the Service

If your problem is the panel rather than the amount of power coming into the house, you do not need a full service upgrade. Replacing the panel at your existing amperage skips the utility disconnect, finishes in a day, and costs meaningfully less, while still producing an ESA Certificate of Inspection.

When you need breaker panel replacement, you want a licensed pro who works to Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) standards. EZ Smart delivers exactly that across Toronto and the GTA.

Breaker Panel Replacement in Toronto & the GTA

Breaker panel replacement means swapping the panel itself while keeping your existing service size. It is a smaller, cheaper, faster job than a full service upgrade, and for a lot of homes it is exactly the right scope.

Replacement vs Service Upgrade — The Practical Difference

A service upgrade increases capacity, say 100A to 200A. That means new service conductors, a new mast and meter base, a utility disconnect, and a longer timeline.

A panel replacement keeps your current capacity and replaces the distribution equipment. The incoming service stays as it is, so the job is typically completed in a day and costs meaningfully less than a full service upgrade. Panel work starts from $1,599, and a like-for-like replacement sits at the lower end.

The deciding question is simple: is your problem the panel, or is it the amount of power coming into the house? If a load calculation says 100A still covers your loads and there are no plans for an EV charger or suite, replacing the panel alone is the sensible spend.

Reasons to Replace the Panel but Not the Service

  • A defective or recalled make. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are the most common reason. The service size may be perfectly adequate; the panel is the liability.
  • No remaining slots. A full panel blocks any new circuit. A replacement with more spaces solves it without touching the service.
  • Damaged bus bar or heat damage. Not repairable, but not necessarily a capacity problem.
  • Obsolete equipment with no available breakers. If replacement breakers are no longer manufactured, one failure leaves you stuck.
  • Rust or moisture damage. Common in unfinished basements and garages.
  • A home inspection finding. Often raised during a sale, where the buyer wants the panel dealt with but the service is fine.

It Still Needs a Permit

Replacing a panel is alteration work under the Ontario Electrical Code and requires an ESA notification, even though the service size is unchanged. We file it and see the job through to the Certificate of Inspection — the same documentation you would get from a full upgrade, which is what matters at resale.

What the Day Looks Like

Power is off for the working day. We remove the old panel, mount and land the new one, transfer every circuit, correct any double-taps or improper terminations we find along the way, update grounding and bonding where needed, then label the directory properly and test before restoring power.

Not Sure Which You Need?

We run the load calculation first. If the service is adequate we will tell you so rather than selling you an upgrade you do not need.

FAQ
FAQ
Common questions about breaker panel replacement
1
What is the difference between panel replacement and a service upgrade?

A replacement swaps the panel while keeping your existing amperage. An upgrade increases capacity and involves new service conductors, mast, meter base, and a utility disconnect. Replacement is faster and cheaper.

2
Do I need a permit just to replace the panel?

Yes. It is alteration work under the Ontario Electrical Code and requires an ESA notification, even when the service size does not change. You receive a Certificate of Inspection at the end.

3
How much does breaker panel replacement cost?

Panel work starts from $1,599, and a like-for-like replacement sits at the lower end because it avoids the utility disconnect and service conductor work a full 200A upgrade requires. Your actual price depends on circuit count and panel location, and we quote in writing after a free assessment.

4
Can I keep my existing breakers in the new panel?

Generally no. Breakers must be a type listed for the specific panel, so a new panel normally means new breakers. Reusing mismatched breakers is a code violation and a safety risk.

5
How long does it take?

Usually a single working day, with the power off for most of it. Because there is no utility disconnect to schedule, it can typically be booked much sooner than a service upgrade.

Outstanding Electrician – Highly Recommend Amir at EZSMART CORPORATION After interviewing eleven electricians, I chose Amir from EZSMART CORPORATION to upgrade my home to 200A service and install an EV charger—and I couldn’t be happier with that decision. From our first conversation, Amir made me feel confident and at ease. He was honest, transparent, and never tried to upsell unnecessary work. Instead, he offered practical advice and even recommended the best EV charger for my vehicle. Once the job began, a few unexpected issues came up—none of which were his fault or included in the original estimate. Still, Amir resolved them without charging extra. That level of integrity is rare. Amir’s professionalism, fairness, and attention to detail truly set him apart. If you need electrical work done, I highly recommend Amir and EZSMART CORPORATION.
