Knob-and-tube in a pre-war Toronto house, or aluminum branch wiring from the 1960s and 70s. Both are common here, both raise insurance questions, and both have a proper fix.
We rewire to the Ontario Electrical Code and handle the ESA permit through to your Certificate of Inspection — the document your insurer asks for.
Licensed & ESA-Registered Electricians
Local Toronto Service, Fully Insured

A wiring upgrade replaces the aging cable behind your walls with modern, code-compliant wiring. In a lot of Toronto homes that is not a luxury upgrade. It is the difference between an insurable house and one an underwriter refuses to touch.
Toronto has an enormous stock of pre-1950 housing, which means knob-and-tube is still in service in neighbourhoods across the city. Homes built between the mid-1960s and late 1970s often have aluminum branch wiring instead. Both create real problems, and both have a proper fix.
EZSMART Corp is a licensed electrical contractor with a Master Electrician on staff. We rewire homes across Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, and the wider GTA, and we handle the ESA paperwork from permit through to Certificate of Inspection.
A wiring upgrade means replacing existing branch circuits and, where needed, the feeders that supply them. Depending on what is in your walls, that can mean a full rewire or targeted remediation.
Knob-and-tube has no ground conductor and its insulation becomes brittle with age. It was never designed for the load a modern home puts on it, and it is unsafe to bury in insulation. The accepted fix is replacement.
Aluminum branch wiring is a different problem. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, so terminations loosen over time and overheat at outlets and switches. A full rewire is not always necessary here — pigtailing every device with ESA-approved connectors is a recognised remediation.
Which one applies to your home is not a guess. It is determined by opening devices and inspecting what is actually there.
Fire risk drops. Deteriorating insulation and loose connections are among the leading causes of residential electrical fires. Replacing them removes the cause rather than monitoring it.
Your home becomes insurable. Once the work is documented with an ESA Certificate of Inspection, most insurers will write or reinstate coverage.
Grounded, protected circuits. New wiring brings proper grounding, and GFCI and AFCI protection where the Ontario Electrical Code requires it.
Capacity for how you actually live. Modern circuits support the loads old wiring never anticipated.
Resale value. Documented electrical work removes a major objection before it is raised.
We are fully licensed and insured, with ESA authorization on every job. We file the permit, do the work to the Ontario Electrical Code, and see the inspection through to the Certificate — you are not left chasing paperwork with your insurer.
Rewiring is invasive work, so how it is done matters. We fish cable through finished walls wherever it is possible, keep access holes small and in sensible places, protect floors and furniture, and clean up daily. Every circuit is labelled properly before we leave.
If a full rewire is not warranted, we will tell you. Plenty of aluminum-wired homes are served better by proper pigtailing than by tearing the house apart.
Pick a date and time that works for you. A licensed, ESA-authorized electrician will inspect what is actually in your walls and give you a written scope — no obligation, and no pressure to rewire more than the house needs.

There is no law forcing removal, but insurance usually decides it for you. Most Ontario insurers refuse coverage or charge significantly more while active knob-and-tube remains. It also cannot be safely buried in insulation, which matters if you are improving attic efficiency. Replacement is the practical answer for almost every Toronto homeowner.
Usually, yes. Pigtailing joins a short copper tail to the aluminum conductor at every device using ESA-approved connectors, so the actual termination is copper. It is a recognised remediation and satisfies most insurers. Full replacement is reserved for aluminum wiring that is already damaged or paired with other problems.
Yes. Rewiring is notifiable work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and the notification must be filed by a licensed electrical contractor. The inspection produces a Certificate of Inspection, which is what your insurer and any future buyer will want to see. We handle the filing and the scheduling.
Not entirely. Experienced electricians fish new cable through existing wall cavities, so access holes are usually small and limited to specific points. Some opening is unavoidable, particularly at corners and firestops. Plaster-and-lath walls are harder to work than drywall, and we tell you what to expect before starting.
A typical Toronto home takes several days to about two weeks, depending on size, wall construction, and whether the house is occupied. Partial rewires and aluminum pigtailing are considerably faster. We sequence the work so you are not left without power for the whole project.
It frequently makes coverage possible at all, which matters more than the premium. Once you provide the Certificate of Inspection, insurers can write the policy normally instead of surcharging or declining. Ask your broker what they need before work starts, so the documentation matches their requirements.

Outstanding Electrician – Highly Recommend Amir at EZSMART CORPORATION After interviewing eleven electricians, I chose Amir from EZSMART CORPORATION to upgrade my home to 200A service and install an EV charger—and I couldn’t be happier with that decision. From our first conversation, Amir made me feel confident and at ease. He was honest, transparent, and never tried to upsell unnecessary work. Instead, he offered practical advice and even recommended the best EV charger for my vehicle. Once the job began, a few unexpected issues came up—none of which were his fault or included in the original estimate. Still, Amir resolved them without charging extra. That level of integrity is rare. Amir’s professionalism, fairness, and attention to detail truly set him apart.
