Electrical Panel Repair in Toronto & the GTA

Not every panel problem needs a full replacement. Sometimes the right answer is a targeted repair, and sometimes a repair would be papering over a panel that needs to come out. This page is about telling the two apart honestly.

Problems That Are Genuinely Repairable

• A single failed breaker. Breakers wear out. If the panel is a current, supported make and the bus is in good condition, replacing the breaker is a straightforward fix.
• A loose connection or lug. Loose terminations cause heat, flicker, and intermittent faults. Re-terminating to the correct torque often resolves it completely.
• Double-tapped breakers. Two conductors under a breaker not rated for it is a common inspection finding, and it is corrected by adding the appropriate breakers or a properly installed pigtail.
• Missing knockout covers or a damaged deadfront. These are safety defects with simple fixes.
• Unlabelled circuits. Not a fault, but worth correcting. We map and label as a standalone service.

When Repair Is the Wrong Answer

We will tell you to replace rather than repair when we find any of the following.

Bus bar damage. Once the bus is pitted, burned, or corroded, breakers cannot seat reliably. This is not repairable and it is a fire risk.

Obsolete or defective makes. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have documented histories of breakers failing to trip under fault. Replacing a single breaker in one of these does not fix the underlying problem.

Water damage or corrosion. A panel that has been wet is compromised internally even if it appears to work.

Heat damage. Melted insulation, discoloured busbars, or scorching means the panel has already failed once.

No available capacity. If the real problem is that the service is too small, a repair does not solve anything.

Symptoms Worth Calling About Today

A burning or fishy smell near the panel, a panel cover that is warm to the touch, visible scorch marks, buzzing or crackling, or breakers that trip immediately on reset are all reasons to stop using the affected circuits and call the same day. If there is smoke or you see arcing, treat it as an emergency.

How We Diagnose

We de-energize, remove the deadfront, and inspect the bus, terminations, and breaker seating; check for heat signatures and discolouration; verify grounding and bonding; and confirm breaker sizing against conductor sizes. You get told what is wrong, whether it is repairable, and the cost of each option.
