An air conditioner that trips the breaker is usually signaling that the unit is drawing more electricity than the circuit can safely handle, or that there is an internal fault within the system. Because HVAC systems are high-draw appliances, they put a significant load on your home’s electrical infrastructure, making them sensitive to both mechanical wear and electrical instability.

The most common and easily fixable cause for an AC tripping the breaker is a dirty air filter. When the filter is clogged, the system has to work significantly harder to pull air through, which increases the strain on the blower motor.
The Result: This extra mechanical load forces the motor to draw more amperage, which can eventually exceed the capacity of your circuit breaker.
The Fix: Check your filter today. If it is grey or covered in dust, replace it with a clean one and see if the issue persists.
The outdoor condenser unit is responsible for releasing the heat extracted from your home. If the coils are packed with dirt, leaves, or grass clippings, the unit cannot dissipate heat efficiently.
The Mechanism: High head pressure builds up inside the system because the refrigerant cannot cool down. This forces the compressor to work harder, pulling higher-than-normal amps until the breaker trips to protect the wiring.
The Fix: Gently hose off the outdoor unit (with the power off) to clear debris from the fins. Never use a high-pressure washer, as it can bend the delicate aluminum fins.

HVAC systems generally have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. As components inside the compressor or motor begin to wear out, they naturally require more power to operate.
The Reality: An aging compressor may eventually reach a point where it is drawing more current than the circuit was originally designed to handle, causing the breaker to trip as a safety measure. If your unit is near the end of its service life, the cost of frequent repairs may outweigh the benefit of replacing the system.

Breakers contain a thermal strip that bends when it gets hot; over years of cycling, this metal can become “fatigued” and start tripping at a lower amperage than it is rated for.
