What Is the Difference Between Solid and Stranded Wire?

Strip back the jacket on a length of NMD90 in a Toronto or GTA wall and you will find a single solid copper conductor. Look inside an appliance cord or a fixture whip and you will find a bundle of thin strands twisted together instead. Both are legitimate, code-recognized conductor types — they are just built for different jobs. This guide covers the real difference and where each one belongs.

What is the difference between solid and stranded wire?

Solid wire is a single continuous piece of copper. Stranded wire is made of many thin copper strands twisted or bundled together into the same overall gauge. Solid wire holds its shape, terminates cleanly under a screw, and is the standard for fixed residential branch circuit wiring like NMD90. Stranded wire flexes without fatiguing or breaking, which is why it is used anywhere the conductor moves — appliance cords, fixture whips, and any connection expected to see repeated motion or vibration.

Why residential branch circuits use solid wire

  • It holds its bend. Once routed through a stud bay and formed into a device box, solid wire stays put rather than springing back.
  • It terminates cleanly under a screw terminal. A solid conductor wrapped around a screw and torqued down makes full, even contact — the connection type most residential devices are designed around.
  • It costs less than stranded wire of the same gauge for the volume used in typical house wiring.

Where stranded wire is the right choice

  • Appliance cords — flexed every time the appliance is moved or the cord is coiled for storage.
  • Fixture whips connecting a light fixture or ceiling fan to the junction box, where some movement during installation and any future servicing is expected.

Terminating each type correctly

  • Solid wire on a screw terminal: wrap clockwise around the screw so tightening pulls the loop closed, not open.

Can you substitute one for the other?

Not casually. Using stranded wire for a fixed branch circuit run inside a wall is unusual and not how the system is designed to be terminated at standard residential devices. Using solid wire where flexibility is needed — an appliance cord, for instance — would fatigue and eventually break at the point of repeated bending, since solid copper work-hardens and cracks under cyclic flex in a way stranded copper does not. Each type exists because it solves a specific problem the other does not.

How to tell which one you are looking at

  • Strip a short length of insulation — solid wire is one visible piece of copper. Stranded wire is visibly made of multiple thin strands.
  • Solid wire holds a bent shape when flexed. Stranded wire springs back toward straight.
  • Cable jacket markings sometimes note the conductor type, though not always for residential NMD90 (which is solid by default).

The mismatch we correct most often in the GTA is a fixture whip or appliance connection where someone spliced solid branch-circuit wire directly onto a fixture’s stranded leads without a proper connector rated for the combination, or worse, tried to land bare stranded wire under a screw terminal without twisting the strands first. A few stray copper filaments escaping a screw terminal is a classic cause of an intermittent short months later. If you are connecting a fixture with stranded leads to your home’s solid branch wiring, take the extra thirty seconds to twist the stranded end tightly before it goes into the wire nut or under the screw — it is the difference between a connection that lasts and one that slowly works itself loose.
