What Is the Cost to Install a Smart Thermostat in Ontario?

What Is the Cost to Install a Smart Thermostat in Ontario?

Smart thermostats improve home comfort and energy efficiency — but they must be installed correctly to work properly and safely. In Ontario, thermostat installation is electrical work that should be performed by a licensed electrical contractor, particularly in homes with complex wiring or dedicated circuits for heating and cooling systems. Here is what smart thermostat installation costs.

Smart Thermostat Installation Cost in Ontario

Installing a smart thermostat in Ontario starts at $150. This covers the labour for replacing your existing thermostat with a new smart thermostat and configuring it for operation. The thermostat unit itself is not included in this price — you purchase the device separately.

What Is Included in the Installation?

  • Removal of the existing thermostat
  • Assessment of the existing wiring to confirm compatibility with the new smart thermostat
  • Installation and wiring of the new smart thermostat
  • Basic setup and connection to your home’s Wi-Fi network (if applicable)
  • Confirmation that the heating and cooling system operates correctly after installation

Do Smart Thermostats Require a Common Wire (C-Wire)?

Most smart thermostats require a common wire (C-wire) to maintain a continuous low-voltage power supply. Many older homes were wired with only two or three wires to the thermostat — without a C-wire. If your existing system does not have a C-wire, your installer can assess whether a C-wire adapter, a power bridge kit, or new wiring is the appropriate solution.

Your licensed electrician will confirm wiring compatibility before installation begins and advise on any additional work required if the wiring does not support the new smart thermostat directly.

Does Smart Thermostat Installation Require an ESA Permit in Ontario?

Replacing a thermostat on a low-voltage control circuit (the standard thermostat wiring for forced-air heating and cooling systems) typically does not require an ESA permit when it is a like-for-like replacement. However, if new wiring is required — such as running a new C-wire or installing a 120V line-voltage thermostat for electric baseboard heaters — the work may require a permit.

Line-voltage thermostats (used with electric baseboard heaters and some radiant heating systems) operate at 120V or 240V and are regulated electrical work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. These installations must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor.
