Leaving a phone charger plugged in with no device connected is generally safe when the charger is a quality, certified product. The standby power draw is negligible, and modern charger designs include internal protection against overheating. However, there are important differences between certified and uncertified chargers, and a few precautions worth knowing.
A quality phone charger in standby (plugged in, no device attached) draws approximately 0.1 to 0.5 watts of power. Over a full year, this amounts to less than 5 kilowatt-hours — roughly $0.50 to $1.00 at Ontario electricity rates. This is sometimes called “phantom load” or “vampire power.” The energy cost is negligible, and the heat generated at this power level is also negligible for a properly designed charger.
The meaningful risk comes from counterfeit or uncertified chargers, not from certified products. In Canada, electrical devices sold for use in homes must carry a certification mark from a recognized testing body — CSA, UL (with the c-UL mark for Canada), or ETL. For convenience, unplugging chargers not in active use eliminates any standby draw and reduces the number of devices connected to outlets — which is always a sensible habit if a circuit is already heavily loaded. Avoid plugging chargers behind furniture where heat cannot dissipate or where a smouldering fault might go undetected.
