EV charger cable length affects both the convenience of daily charging and the cost of the electrical installation. There are two distinct cable distances to consider: the length of the charging cable between the EV charger (EVSE) and your vehicle, and the length of the wiring run from your electrical panel to the charger itself. Here is what you need to know about both.
The cable attached to your Level 2 EV charger that plugs into your vehicle is typically 5 to 7.5 metres (16 to 25 feet) long. Most residential EVSEs ship with a cable in this range, which is sufficient to reach a vehicle parked in a standard garage or driveway.
Extension cords must never be used with Level 2 EV chargers (240V). Extension cords rated for 240V and 40 amps are rare, expensive, and not approved for continuous high-power use. Using an extension cord risks overheating, fire, and voiding the charger’s warranty. If the cable does not reach your vehicle, the charger itself should be repositioned — not the cable extended.
The wiring that runs from your electrical panel to the EV charger location can be as long as needed — but longer runs require larger wire gauge to prevent excessive voltage drop. Voltage drop reduces charging efficiency and can cause the charger to operate below its rated output.

For detached garage EV charger installations, installing a subpanel in the garage and running a larger feeder from the main panel is often more cost-effective than running individual circuits for each load. This also provides capacity for future additions such as a workshop circuit or LED lighting.
