Home Standby Generator Installation Cost in Ontario

Home Standby Generator Installation Cost in Ontario

A home standby generator automatically provides backup power during a grid outage — no extension cords, no manual startup. For Ontario homeowners who want seamless power continuity for their home or business, a standby generator is a significant but practical investment. Here is what generator installation costs in Ontario and what the price includes.

How Much Does Standby Generator Installation Cost in Ontario?

Installation labour for a home standby generator in Ontario starts at $3,000. This covers the electrical installation work performed by a licensed electrical contractor — including the transfer switch, wiring connections, and panel integration. The ESA permit and inspection are additional.

The generator unit itself — the hardware — is purchased separately and is not included in the installation labour price. Generator prices vary significantly depending on the brand, output capacity (measured in kilowatts), and features. Your contractor can help you select a unit appropriate for your home’s load requirements.

What Does the Installation Labour Include?

The installation labour covers the electrical work required to connect the generator to your home’s electrical system:

  • Installation of an automatic transfer switch (ATS) — the device that detects a grid outage and switches your home to generator power automatically
  • Wiring from the transfer switch to the electrical panel
  • Integration with the main panel or a dedicated sub-panel for critical circuits
  • All electrical connections required for safe, code-compliant operation
  • Coordination of the ESA permit and inspection

Gas line connection, foundation pad installation, and the generator unit itself are separate from the electrical installation labour. Your project may require a licensed gas technician for the gas supply line in addition to the licensed electrical contractor.

What Is an Automatic Transfer Switch?

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is the critical component that makes a standby generator work without any manual intervention. When the ATS detects that grid power has failed, it signals the generator to start and then switches your home’s electrical load from the grid to the generator — typically within seconds. When grid power is restored, the ATS switches the load back and shuts the generator down.

The ATS must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor, as it involves work inside and adjacent to the main electrical panel. This is regulated electrical work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).

Does Generator Installation Require a Permit in Ontario?

Yes. Installing a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch involves regulated electrical work that requires an ESA permit under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The Electrical Safety Authority will inspect the installation after the work is complete to confirm it meets code.

Only a licensed electrical contractor can legally pull the ESA permit for this work. In Ontario, only licensed electrical contractors and master electricians are authorized to perform electrical work on residential, commercial, or industrial properties.

What Size Generator Do I Need?

Generator sizing depends on the electrical load you want to support during an outage. A whole-home generator that can power all circuits simultaneously requires a larger unit than one that supplies only critical circuits — such as the furnace, refrigerator, sump pump, and select outlets. Your licensed electrical contractor will calculate your load requirements and recommend an appropriate unit size before any equipment is purchased.
