Homeowners considering a generator often ask the same simple question: does it turn on by itself? This guide explains how automatic operation actually works, what the delay is, and what to expect during a Toronto or GTA outage.

Does a generator automatically turn on when the power goes out?

A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch (ATS) starts within 10 to 30 seconds of detecting utility power loss. The ATS senses the outage, signals the generator to start, waits for stable output, then disconnects the home from the grid and connects it to the generator. Portable generators do not turn on automatically — they require the homeowner to be present, roll it out, fuel it, and pull-start or key-start manually.

How automatic transfer switches work

Step by step during an outage:

  1. Utility power fails. Home goes dark for a moment.
  2. ATS senses loss after a brief filter period (2–10 seconds to avoid triggering on very brief blips).
  3. ATS signals generator to start. Generator engine cranks.
  4. Generator reaches stable output (usually 5–15 seconds after start).

When utility power returns:

  2. ATS transfers home back to grid.
