    Do Smart Home Devices Use a Lot of Electricity?

    Smart home devices are always on — always listening, always connected. Homeowners in Toronto and the GTA worry that dozens of always-on devices are quietly running up their electric bill. The reality is much smaller than most people expect, but not zero. This guide breaks down the real electricity use of common smart home devices and where the actual power savings and costs land.

    Do smart home devices use a lot of electricity?

    Individually, smart home devices use very little electricity. A smart plug draws 0.5–2 watts in standby. A smart bulb draws 0.3–0.6W in standby (much less than the 60W or so when on). A smart speaker like Amazon Echo draws 2–3W idle. A hub draws 1–5W. Even a home with 50+ smart devices adds maybe $30–$80 CAD per year to the electric bill in Ontario.
