If you have a standard grid-tied solar system without battery backup, your solar panels will not power your home during a grid outage — even on a sunny day. This surprises many solar owners.
The reason is a safety requirement called anti-islanding protection. Grid-tied solar inverters are required by code to detect a grid outage and shut down automatically within seconds. This prevents your solar system from sending power back onto the utility lines while workers are trying to repair the outage — a situation that could be lethal for line workers.
The result: no grid power + no battery = no power, even with solar panels on your roof.
If your solar system includes a battery backup (such as Tesla Powerwall or a similar home battery), the situation is different. When the grid goes down, the battery’s gateway device disconnects your home from the utility lines and the battery takes over. Your solar panels can continue generating power and recharging the battery — allowing you to run your home through an extended outage as long as the sun is shining.
The loads you can power during an outage depend on the battery’s capacity and the size of your solar array. Essential loads — refrigerator, lights, outlets, phone charging — can typically be maintained indefinitely in summer conditions. High-draw appliances like central air conditioning and electric vehicle chargers may require additional battery capacity.
Certain solar inverters offer a limited “off-grid” or “safe supply” mode that allows a small amount of solar power output from a dedicated outlet during an outage — without a full battery system. This is not whole-home backup; it typically powers a single circuit or outlet at reduced capacity. Check with your inverter manufacturer to confirm whether this feature is available on your model.
