Can I Install an EV Charger Myself?

No — not the electrical work, and not legally in Ontario. A hardwired EV charger installation must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor, filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, and inspected.

This is not one of those rules that is quietly ignored. EV charger installations are inspected, and the consequences of an undocumented one tend to surface at the worst possible moment: during a house sale, or on an insurance claim after a fire.

What Ontario Law Actually Requires

Homeowners in Ontario may perform certain electrical work in their own single-family home. That permission is narrower than most people assume, and it does not extend to installing an EV charger on a new dedicated circuit.

A hardwired Level 2 charger requires:

  • Installation by a Licensed Electrical Contractor holding an ECRA/ESA licence number.
  • An ESA notification filed before the work begins.
  • An inspection by ESA once the work is complete.
  • A resulting Certificate of Inspection, which becomes part of your property record.

The contractor files the notification. For this category of work it is not paperwork a homeowner can pull themselves.

Why This One Matters More Than Most

An EV charger is the largest sustained load in a typical home. It runs at high current for hours, unattended, usually while everyone is asleep. That combination is unforgiving of exactly the errors that DIY installations tend to produce.

The failures we get called out to fix are consistent: undersized conductors that run hot, terminations that were never torqued to specification and work loose over time, missing or incorrect GFCI protection, breakers that do not match the panel make, and circuits sized to the charger’s draw rather than to 125% of it as the Code requires for a continuous load.

None of these are visible once the cover is back on. They show up months later as heat damage.

The Practical Consequences

  • Insurance. Uninspected electrical work gives an insurer grounds to dispute a fire claim. This is the risk that costs the most and gets considered the least.
  • Resale. A home inspector will flag an EV charger with no Certificate of Inspection, and it becomes a negotiating point or a condition of closing.
  • Remediation. Work already completed can be inspected after the fact, but if it does not meet Code it has to be corrected — frequently costing more than doing it properly at the outset.
  • Warranty. Several charger manufacturers require professional installation for the warranty to remain valid.

What About a Plug-In Charger?

This is where most of the confusion sits. If a suitable 240-volt receptacle already exists and is in sound condition, plugging a portable charger into it is simply using an appliance. That part is fine.

Installing that receptacle is a different matter. A new NEMA 14-50 outlet on a new circuit is electrical work: it needs a licensed contractor, an ESA notification, and an inspection, exactly as a hardwired unit does. Buying a plug-in charger does not sidestep the requirement — it simply moves it to the receptacle.

Using an existing dryer outlet is a separate question with its own risks, and it is not a safe permanent arrangement without a proper interlock or splitter.

What You Can Usefully Do Yourself

Quite a lot, and it genuinely affects both the outcome and the cost:

  • Choose the charger. Research amperage, cable length, and smart features before booking anyone.
  • Pick the location thoughtfully. The closer to the panel, the shorter the run and the lower the cost.
  • Clear the access. Making the panel and the cable route reachable saves labour time.
  • Know your service. Photograph the panel label and the inside of the door before requesting quotes.
  • Ask for the load calculation. A contractor who has not done one is not yet in a position to quote accurately.
  • Check rebate programs before purchasing, since most require applications in a set order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a plug-in Level 2 charger without an electrician?
You can plug one into a suitable existing receptacle. You cannot install that receptacle yourself — a new 240-volt circuit requires a licensed contractor and an ESA inspection.

I already installed one. What now?
Have a licensed contractor inspect it and file with ESA. Work can be assessed after the fact and corrected where needed, which is a far better position than leaving it undocumented.

What if I am a certified electrician but not a contractor?
Being a certified electrician is not the same as holding a contractor licence. The ECRA/ESA contractor licence is what permits filing the notification.

Does ESA actually inspect residential EV chargers?
Yes. It is a routine notification category and inspections are carried out.

How long does the whole process take?
A straightforward installation is typically a single day, with the inspection following. Jobs involving panel work or a utility disconnect take longer.
