Are Two-Prong Outlets Safe for Modern Electronics?

Two-prong outlets are ungrounded — they have no ground wire to safely redirect fault current. Modern electronics, appliances, and power tools are designed for three-prong grounded outlets and rely on the ground for both safety and proper operation. Here is what you need to know if your home still has two-prong outlets.

Why Two-Prong Outlets Lack a Ground

Older homes built before the 1960s were wired with two conductors: a hot wire and a neutral wire. There was no equipment grounding conductor. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code now requires grounded three-prong outlets in new construction and in circuits serving kitchens, bathrooms, and other locations where shock risk is elevated.

The Risk to Modern Electronics

Sensitive electronics — computers, televisions, audio equipment, and medical devices — depend on the ground conductor to function correctly. Without a ground:

  • Surge protectors cannot function properly — most power bars with surge protection require a ground to clamp excess voltage
  • Static buildup can damage components in computers and other sensitive devices
  • If an internal fault develops in an appliance, fault current has no safe path and may travel through the person using it
  • Some equipment will display errors or behave erratically when the ground reference is absent

Options for Upgrading Two-Prong Outlets in Ontario

You do not always need to run new wiring to upgrade a two-prong outlet. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code permits the following approaches:

  • GFCI-protected three-prong outlet — a GFCI outlet or GFCI breaker can protect a three-prong outlet even without a ground wire. The OESC allows this provided the outlet is labelled “No Equipment Ground.” This protects against shock but does not provide a true equipment ground for electronics.
  • Run a new ground wire — the most complete solution. A licensed electrician runs an equipment grounding conductor back to the panel, converting the circuit to a fully grounded three-wire system.
  • Replace the wiring run — if the existing wiring is deteriorated or aluminum, complete rewiring may be the better long-term option.

Does This Require an ESA Permit in Ontario?

Yes. Modifying wiring, adding grounding conductors, or upgrading circuits is regulated electrical work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. An ESA permit is required and the work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor.
