No. A main service upgrade involves the utility connection and cannot be done under a homeowner permit in Ontario. Beyond the legal issue, working in a panel with a live incoming service is genuinely dangerous — the main lugs stay energized even with the main breaker off.
Yes, for most of the working day while the service is disconnected, the new panel is installed, and circuits are transferred. We schedule the disconnect with your utility in advance and let you know the window so you can plan around it.
Not always, but often. A Level 2 charger draws 32-48A continuously. On a 100A service already running central A/C, an electric dryer, and a range, a load calculation frequently comes back over capacity. Load management devices are sometimes an alternative — we run the calculation and tell you honestly which applies.
Often yes. An obsolete fuse box, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, or an undersized 60A service shows up in every home inspection and becomes a price negotiation. A documented upgrade with an ESA Certificate of Inspection removes that objection.
