Is It Safe to Leave a Phone Charger Plugged In with Nothing Attached?

Leaving a phone charger plugged in with no device connected is generally safe when the charger is a quality, certified product. The standby power draw is negligible, and modern charger designs include internal protection against overheating. However, there are important differences between certified and uncertified chargers, and a few precautions worth knowing.

How Much Power Does an Idle Charger Draw?

A quality phone charger in standby (plugged in, no device attached) draws approximately 0.1 to 0.5 watts of power. Over a full year, this amounts to less than 5 kilowatt-hours — roughly $0.50 to $1.00 at Ontario electricity rates. This is sometimes called “phantom load” or “vampire power.” The energy cost is negligible, and the heat generated at this power level is also negligible for a properly designed charger.

The Risk: Uncertified Chargers

The meaningful risk comes from counterfeit or uncertified chargers, not from certified products. In Canada, electrical devices sold for use in homes must carry a certification mark from a recognized testing body — CSA, UL (with the c-UL mark for Canada), or ETL. Uncertified chargers sold online, particularly cheap no-name units without visible certification marks, may:

  • Lack adequate protection against overheating even under low-load or no-load conditions
  • Have substandard internal components that degrade faster
  • Generate excessive heat in standby due to poorly designed power supply circuits
  • Pose a fire risk if their internal components fail

Signs a Charger Should Be Replaced

Replace a charger immediately if you notice:

  • The charger body feels warm or hot when nothing is plugged in
  • Discoloration, scorch marks, or melted plastic on the charger or outlet
  • A burning smell from the charger
  • The charger plug fits loosely in the outlet or the outlet itself feels warm
  • The charging cable is frayed, cracked, or the insulation is damaged

Best Practice: Buy Certified, Inspect Regularly

For certified chargers from recognized brands, leaving them plugged in is safe. For convenience, unplugging chargers not in active use eliminates any standby draw and reduces the number of devices connected to outlets — which is always a sensible habit if a circuit is already heavily loaded. Avoid plugging chargers behind furniture where heat cannot dissipate or where a smouldering fault might go undetected.

If your outlets run warm, feel loose, or show discoloration, the issue is likely with the outlet itself rather than the charger.
