Why Is My Breaker Panel Making a Buzzing or Crackling Noise?
A breaker panel should be nearly silent. A low hum from a transformer or the sound of a large appliance cycling is normal. But buzzing, crackling, or clicking sounds originating from the panel itself indicate a problem that should be investigated promptly — pot monitored.
What the Sounds Mean
- Buzzing: A steady buzz from a single breaker typically indicates the breaker is in a continuous overload state — carrying more current than its trip rating but not quite enough to trip. This happens when a circuit is marginally overloaded over an extended period. The breaker should trip, but some older or worn breakers lose trip sensitivity. A buzzing breaker that does not trip is a fire hazard
- Crackling: A crackling or sizzling sound from inside the panel indicates arcing — electricity jumping across a gap between conductors, terminals, or a loose connection. Arcing generates temperatures that can ignite nearby material. This is an urgent fault
- Clicking or popping: Intermittent clicking can indicate a breaker that is trying to hold a marginal load, or a loose bus bar connection that makes and breaks contact as the panel warms and cools with load cycling
What to Do
- Do not open the panel cover yourself — the bus bars inside are always energized regardless of breaker positions, and contact with them is fatal
- If the sound is accompanied by a burning smell, visible discolouration on the panel cover, or heat radiating from the cover, this is an emergency — call a licensed electrician immediately
- If the sound is intermittent and there are no other symptoms, schedule an inspection within 24-48 hours — do not delay
EZSMART inspects and repairs panel faults across Ontario, including loose connections, failing breakers, and damaged bus bars. A noisy panel is not a minor inconvenience — it is an early warning of a potentially serious fault. Contact us to diagnose the source before it develops further.
