How to Properly Use Wago Connectors vs. Wire Nuts
Wago lever-nut connectors and traditional wire nuts both make wire splices in junction boxes, but they work differently and have different strengths. Wago connectors (specifically the 221 series) allow quick, tool-free connections by lifting a lever, inserting the wire, and closing the lever. Wire nuts require twisting wires together and screwing the cap down. Both are acceptable under the Canadian Electrical Code when used correctly for their rated wire size and conductor count.
When to Use Each
- Wago connectors: ideal when working in cramped boxes or when connecting different wire gauges — the transparent body lets you visually confirm insertion depth
- Wago connectors: better for aluminum-to-copper splices (use Wago 221 rated for aluminum) — traditional wire nuts with aluminum require anti-oxidant compound and specific aluminum-rated nuts
- Wire nuts: reliable for copper-to-copper splices in accessible boxes, lower cost per connection
- Wire nuts: available in larger sizes that handle more conductors than most Wago models
Common Mistakes
- Using a Wago connector rated for 14 AWG on 12 AWG wire — always check the conductor size rating on the connector body
- Under-inserting wire into a Wago connector — strip to the depth marked on the connector (typically 11mm) and confirm the wire is visible through the inspection window
- Over-tightening wire nuts on stranded wire — stranded wire can pull out if the nut is not sized for stranded conductors
- Mixing conductor counts beyond the connector rating — both Wago and wire nuts are rated for a maximum number of conductors
