Installing a smart thermostat in an Ontario home is straightforward when the existing heating system already has a 24-volt control wire (called a C-wire or common wire) running to the thermostat location. When that wire is absent — common in older furnaces and boilers — the smart thermostat needs a reliable 24-volt common connection to power its Wi-Fi radio and display. One solution is to install a small 24-volt transformer that adds the missing C-wire circuit. This guide explains how that transformer wiring works and what the installation involves.
A 24-volt transformer for a smart thermostat is a step-down transformer that converts 120V AC from an outlet or junction box to 24V AC, providing the common (C) terminal voltage the thermostat needs to operate continuously. Understanding where this transformer fits in the thermostat circuit helps clarify what the wiring involves.
Older thermostats were purely mechanical or simple electronic devices that drew minimal power — they could “power steal” a small amount of current from the heating/cooling control circuit without affecting system operation. Smart thermostats with Wi-Fi, colour displays, and always-on sensors cannot reliably power-steal without causing problems: rapid system cycling, flickering displays, and interference with heating or cooling equipment. A stable power source — the C-wire — is the correct solution.
The C-wire is the common terminal of the furnace or air handler’s 24-volt transformer. In systems that have a C-wire run to the thermostat location, the smart thermostat simply connects to the C terminal. In systems without a C-wire at the thermostat, the options are:
A plug-in 24V transformer (such as those made by Ecobee, Nest, or third-party suppliers) connects to a standard 120V outlet and outputs 24V AC on two low-voltage terminals. One terminal provides the R (power) wire that goes to the thermostat’s R terminal, and the other provides the C (common) wire that goes to the thermostat’s C terminal. The thermostat then operates entirely from this local transformer rather than from the furnace’s transformer.
When wiring this configuration:
A hardwired 24V transformer — one that connects directly to 120V line voltage in a junction box rather than plugging into an outlet — requires an ESA permit in Ontario. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) classify any work that involves making connections inside a junction box, adding a new branch circuit connection, or installing a device that draws line voltage as electrical work requiring a permit and, in most cases, an ESA-licensed electrician.
A plug-in transformer that uses an existing outlet does not require an ESA permit for the low-voltage wiring portion — the 24V wiring from the transformer to the thermostat is low-voltage work that homeowners can perform. However, if no outlet exists near the thermostat location and one needs to be added, adding that outlet requires a permit.
Standard thermostat wire color conventions in Canadian residential systems:
These are conventions, not universal standards — always identify the actual function of each wire at the furnace control board before connecting anything at the thermostat. A wire labelled blue in the thermostat cable may be used for a different function depending on the original installer’s choices.
The most common smart thermostat installation issue we encounter is a system that works intermittently — the thermostat reboots, loses Wi-Fi, or shows low-power warnings. In nearly every case, the root cause is missing C-wire power: the thermostat is attempting to power-steal and the furnace control board is not compatible with that approach. The fix is always a proper C-wire connection. If the furnace has a 5-wire cable running to the thermostat and one of those wires is unused (common in systems that have heating only, no cooling, leaving the Y and G wires unused), that spare wire can be used as a C-wire without running new cable. If there is no spare wire, the cleanest solution is to run a new 18/5 or 18/8 thermostat cable. A plug-in 24V transformer near the thermostat is a workable solution when outlet access is available and running new wire is difficult, but it does add a transformer to maintain. We generally recommend running new cable where possible for a clean, long-term installation.
