Can I Staple Romex Wire to Studs?

Running new cable through a Toronto or GTA renovation eventually means securing it to the framing, and stapling is the standard method. The question homeowners get wrong is not whether stapling is allowed — it is how, how often, and with what staple. Get any of those wrong and the cable jacket takes the damage instead of holding it in place. This guide covers the actual support rules.

Can I staple Romex wire to studs?

Yes, NMD90 cable (the Canadian equivalent of Romex) can and typically should be stapled to studs and joists using cable staples specifically listed for non-metallic sheathed cable. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires support within 300 mm (about 12 inches) of every box and at intervals not exceeding 1.5 m (about 5 feet) along the run. Use a staple sized to sit flush without pinching the cable jacket — a standard hammer-in cable staple or a proper cable stapler, never a regular office or construction staple gun with generic staples.

The two spacing rules that matter

  • Within 300 mm of every box or fitting. The cable must be secured close to where it enters a device box, junction box, or panel — this prevents strain on the termination itself.
  • At least every 1.5 m along the run. Consistent support prevents sagging, which over years can chafe the jacket against framing edges or drywall screws.

Both rules apply together — a long run needs both the box-proximity staple and the interval staples along its length.

Using the right staple

  • Listed cable staples (sold specifically for NMD90/Romex) have a rounded, wide crown designed to sit against the cable without cutting into the jacket.
  • Drive straight and flush — not so deep that the staple bites into the jacket, not so shallow that the cable can slide underneath.
  • Plastic cable clips (nail-on style) are an accepted alternative, especially useful on masonry or where a hammer staple is awkward.
  • Never use a standard construction staple gun with narrow-crown staples — these are far more likely to pierce the cable jacket and nick or cut the conductors inside.

Common stapling mistakes

  • Overdriving the staple. Crushes or pierces the jacket, sometimes damaging conductor insulation underneath without any visible sign from outside.
  • Stapling too infrequently. Sagging cable rubs against sharp framing edges over years, especially in unfinished basements or attics with foot traffic nearby.
  • Stapling multiple cables bundled together without accounting for the derating that applies when several current-carrying cables share close, bundled contact — this affects ampacity, not just physical support.
  • Missing the 300 mm rule at boxes, leaving the cable free to pull on the termination when tugged or flexed.
  • Stapling directly over a bend where the cable is already under mechanical stress, concentrating damage at that point.

Where stapling rules differ

  • Through bored holes in studs or joists, the cable does not need stapling at every point since the framing itself provides support — but it still needs securing within 300 mm of boxes and at the standard interval on any exposed run.
  • On exposed cable runs in a basement or garage where the cable is not fishing through drilled holes, the full stapling schedule applies along the entire visible run.
  • Vertical runs (dropping down inside a wall to a box) generally need support at the top and near the box, with interval spacing in between on longer drops.

Why proper support matters beyond just tidiness

Unsupported cable sags over time under its own weight and thermal cycling. That sag brings the cable into contact with sharp stud edges, drywall screw tips, or HVAC ductwork — any of which can slowly abrade the jacket. A properly stapled cable stays exactly where it was installed, with no opportunity to migrate into contact with something that damages it years later. This is the same mechanical-protection principle behind nail plates on cables crossing stud edges.

The stapling defect we correct most often in GTA DIY work is not missing staples — it is overdriven ones. A homeowner using a framing hammer instead of a lighter tack hammer tends to drive the staple hard enough to visibly dent the cable jacket, sometimes deep enough to nick the conductor insulation beneath. If you are stapling your own cable runs, use a lighter hammer and stop the moment the staple sits flush — do not keep swinging until it feels fully seated the way you would with a framing nail.
