Hardwired smoke detectors and interconnected smoke alarm systems provide reliable protection — unlike battery-only units, they cannot fail simply because a battery dies. In Ontario, new construction and significant renovations require hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms. Here is what smoke detector wiring and installation costs.
Smoke detector wiring and installation in Ontario starts at $150. This covers the labour to wire and install a smoke detector on an existing circuit. The cost increases with the number of detectors, the complexity of the wiring route, and whether interconnection wiring is required to link multiple units together.
Interconnected smoke alarms are wired so that when one detector triggers, all detectors in the building sound simultaneously. This is required by the Ontario Fire Code in most residential occupancies — if there is a fire in the basement, the alarm sounds on every floor, giving occupants maximum warning time regardless of where they are in the building.
Interconnection can be achieved through wired connections between detectors or through wireless interconnect-capable units. A licensed electrician will assess the existing wiring and recommend the most practical approach for your building.
Under the Ontario Fire Code, every residential occupancy must have smoke alarms:
In new construction and in existing homes undergoing significant renovation, the Ontario Building Code requires hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms with battery backup. Battery-only units are permitted in some existing homes where hardwiring is not feasible, but hardwired interconnected alarms are always the preferred solution for reliability and code compliance during renovations.
Installing new wiring for smoke detectors is regulated electrical work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and requires an ESA permit. This applies to new circuit runs or significant additions to existing circuits. Replacing an existing hardwired smoke detector on an existing circuit as a like-for-like swap typically does not require a permit.
All smoke detector wiring work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor or master electrician in Ontario.
EZSMART installs and wires hardwired, interconnected smoke detectors for residential and commercial properties across Ontario. We assess your existing system, confirm compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and Building Code, and complete the installation with the required ESA permit.
