How Do You Ground an Older Home That Has No Ground Wires?

Two-prong outlets throughout a Toronto or GTA home are the giveaway: the wiring predates the grounding conductor that modern circuits carry as standard. Homeowners often ask whether they can simply add a ground somehow, or whether a full rewire is the only fix. There are real, code-compliant middle paths. This guide covers exactly how grounding works in an older home and what your realistic options are.

How do you ground an older home that has no ground wires?

There is no shortcut that magically adds a true ground to a two-wire circuit without running a conductor back to the panel. Your two code-compliant options in Ontario are: run a new grounded circuit (new cable with a ground conductor, the permanent fix), or install a GFCI receptacle labelled “No Equipment Ground” on the existing two-wire circuit, which restores shock protection without a true ground path. Both require an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor and an ESA notification for anything beyond a straight device swap.

Why grounding matters

The ground conductor gives fault current a low-resistance path back to the panel so a breaker trips quickly when a hot wire touches a metal appliance chassis. Without it, a fault can energize the chassis of a washing machine, a laptop, or a lamp without tripping anything, waiting for a person to become the path to ground instead.
