A non-contact voltage tester (NCVT) is the cheapest piece of gear a homeowner can own that reliably prevents electrical shocks. Point the tip at a wire, hear a beep, know it is live. But the tester is only as trustworthy as the person using it, and there are five specific mistakes that turn a $25 NCVT into a false sense of security.
