Every DIY electrical accident in Ontario has a common opening — the homeowner thought power was off when it was not. Turning off power sounds like the simplest step, but the number of ways to get it wrong is surprisingly large. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to safely turn off power before starting DIY electrical work, why flipping the wall switch is not enough, and the exact three-step verification the Ontario Electrical Safety Code implicitly expects every homeowner to perform.
Direct answer: identify the correct breaker, flip it fully to OFF, verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the actual work location that voltage is really gone, and use a lockout tag or leave a note so no one turns it back on. Do all three steps every time.
Direct answer: a wall switch only interrupts the hot conductor between the switch and the fixture. It does not interrupt the incoming feed to the switch box itself. The line-in conductor is still energized inside the box even with the switch OFF. Reaching into a switch box with only the wall switch off is exactly how homeowners get shocked.
Same story for pull chains on ceiling lights — the chain interrupts one conductor at the socket, not the incoming feed at the ceiling box. Kill the breaker, not just the local switch.
Direct answer: labels on breakers are frequently wrong. Panels drift out of accuracy over years of small changes, and a breaker labelled “kitchen counter” may now feed the guest bathroom because a renovation moved the circuit. Verification at the work location catches this.

The last one is the sneakiest. A spouse turns off the microwave, sees the panel with a breaker OFF, thinks it is a mystery, and flips it back on. You are working on a live wire. Post the lockout note where anyone approaching the panel will see it.
Direct answer: if you flip the breaker to OFF and the tester still beeps at the work location, either (1) you have the wrong breaker, (2) the breaker itself is defective and did not open its contacts, or (3) there is a back-feed from another source. Do not work — diagnose.
