A DIY electrical project that works today can still fail an ESA inspection tomorrow, and the gap between “it works” and “it is up to code” is exactly where insurance claims and home-sale disputes live. Ontario homeowners doing their own electrical work under a Homeowner Wiring Notification need to hit both bars — functional and code-compliant. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to tell if your DIY wiring is up to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the top red flags an inspector looks for, and how to self-check before booking the inspection.
Short answer: file the ESA notification and let the inspector confirm
Direct answer: the only definitive way to know DIY wiring is up to code is to file an ESA Homeowner Wiring Notification and pass the inspection. Everything else is self-check. Even licensed contractors have their work reviewed by an inspector — it is the confirmation the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires.
The self-check top 12 (before the inspection)
Correct cable type. NMD-90 for interior residential; NMWU for exterior/wet locations. Never SPT or lamp cord in walls.
Correct gauge for the breaker. 14 AWG for 15 A, 12 AWG for 20 A. Never smaller than the breaker rating.
Cable secured within 300 mm of every box and every 1.4 m along runs. Section 12 requirement.
Boxes properly bonded — bare copper to the green screw on metal boxes and to the device.
Marrettes rated for the number of conductors — yellow for 2-3 x 14 AWG, red for 2-4 x 12 AWG, etc.
Box fill within OESC limits — count conductors, devices, and clamps; compare to box marking.
No exposed splices outside a box. Every splice inside a covered accessible box.
Correct conductor colours. Black or red for hot, white for neutral, bare or green for bond.
AFCI protection where OESC Section 26 requires (most 15 A and 20 A residential branch circuits in new construction).
GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchen counter, exterior, and near sinks.
Devices flush with the wall and mounting screws tight.
Panel schedule updated to reflect the new circuit.
Top mistakes that fail residential inspections
Direct answer: the mistakes that cost homeowners the most inspection failures in the GTA are (1) backstabbed devices instead of side-screw terminals, (2) undersized wire on 20 A circuits, (3) missing AFCI where required, and (4) too many conductors in the box for the box fill limit.
Backstab termination: pushing the conductor into a spring hole rather than looping under the side screw. Inspector-friendly panels reject this immediately. Use side screws for every device.
Wrong gauge on the wrong breaker: 14 AWG on a 20 A breaker is a code violation and a fire risk. Match gauge to breaker rating.
Missing AFCI: the current OESC requires AFCI on almost every 15 A and 20 A residential branch. Not installing them fails on sight.
Box overfill: a 3×2 box with three cables entering plus a receptacle is over the fill limit. Use a deeper box or a bigger box.
Missing box supports: cables not secured within 300 mm of every box. Use staples or cable clamps.
Unused holes or knockouts left open: every hole in a box must be plugged with a knockout seal.
How the ESA inspection actually works
You file the Homeowner Wiring Notification online or by phone before you start work. Fee is around $80-120 for typical residential.
You perform the work to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
You request the inspection when the work is ready — typically requires clean panel access, boxes open for inspection, and no drywall closed over the wiring.
Inspector arrives within a few business days. Walks the work with a checklist. Any issues get written up.
Pass or fail. If fail, you fix and re-inspect (may cost a second fee).
Certificate of Inspection issued. Keep this for your records; insurers and home inspectors ask for it.

When to stop and hire a contractor
