How Do Home Battery Backup Systems Like Tesla Powerwall Work?

How Do Home Battery Backup Systems Like Tesla Powerwall Work?

Home battery backup systems store electrical energy so you can use it when the grid goes down, when electricity rates are high, or when your solar panels are not producing. Tesla Powerwall is one of the most widely known home battery systems, but several other manufacturers offer similar products. Here is how these systems work and what installation involves in Ontario.

How a Home Battery Backup System Works

A home battery system is a large rechargeable battery pack installed inside or outside your home, connected to your electrical panel. It charges from one or more of these sources:

  • Solar panels — excess solar generation that would otherwise be exported to the grid charges the battery instead
  • The grid — the battery charges during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower
  • Both — most systems can combine solar and grid charging intelligently

When the battery is needed — during an outage or during peak pricing periods — it discharges and powers the loads in your home. A gateway device manages the transition and, during a grid outage, isolates your home’s electrical system from the utility lines to prevent backfeed.

Tesla Powerwall at a Glance

The Tesla Powerwall 3 provides 13.5 kWh of usable energy storage and 11.5 kW of continuous power output. A single Powerwall can run essential loads — refrigerator, lights, outlets, Wi-Fi, and some appliances — through a typical overnight outage. Multiple units can be stacked to increase capacity and support larger loads including central air conditioning and EV charging.

What Happens During a Power Outage

When the grid fails, the battery’s gateway device detects the outage within milliseconds and opens a relay that disconnects your home from the utility lines. The battery then takes over, powering the circuits connected to the backup system. This transition is typically fast enough that clocks and sensitive electronics do not lose power.

If you also have solar panels, they continue generating power during the outage and recharge the battery — extending how long you can operate without grid power.

Does Battery Backup Installation Require an ESA Permit in Ontario?

Yes. Installing a home battery backup system involves connection to your electrical panel and requires an ESA permit under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The installation must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor. Your utility provider also needs to be notified of the installation.
