General electrical rough-in wiring for a new home in Ontario starts at $5 per square foot. This covers standard residential wiring — outlets, switches, lighting circuits, and panel rough-in — for a home with a conventional layout and standard electrical requirements.
The $5/sqft starting price applies to straightforward builds. The exact final price depends on the home’s size, the number of circuits required, and the electrical needs specified by the homeowner, architect, or designer.
Custom electrical designs — including home automation systems, media rooms, custom lighting control, solar or battery backup integration, EV charger circuits, standby generator hookups, or any electrical requirements specified by the project’s architect or designer — are assessed and quoted separately from the base per-square-foot rate.

New construction electrical wiring is significantly different from renovation or upgrade work. In new construction, walls and ceilings are open — wire can be run directly between studs and joists before drywall is installed. Renovation or retrofit wiring — adding or replacing circuits in a finished home — requires wire to be fished through walls and ceilings, which is more labour-intensive and priced differently.
Yes. New construction electrical wiring requires an ESA permit under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC). The Electrical Safety Authority inspects the work at multiple stages — typically rough-in before drywall, and final inspection after the build is complete. This process confirms the wiring is safe and code-compliant before occupancy.
Only a licensed electrical contractor can pull this permit and perform the work. In Ontario, only licensed electrical contractors and master electricians are authorized to perform electrical wiring work on residential, commercial, or industrial properties.
