Ceiling fans are one of the most practical upgrades for Ontario homes — they reduce air conditioning costs in summer and help distribute heat in winter. If you’re planning to add or replace a ceiling fan, here’s what installation actually costs in Ontario and what determines the final price.
If your room already has a ceiling box designed to support a fan — typically a rated fan brace box — ceiling fan installation by a licensed electrical contractor starts at $160 per unit. This includes removing the old fixture (if any), installing the new fan, and making all wiring connections.
If there is no existing ceiling box, or if the existing box is not rated for a ceiling fan, new wiring must be added. This involves running wire from a switch to the ceiling location. In this case, ceiling fan installation starts at $300, which includes the new wiring, the installation of a proper fan-rated ceiling box, and the fan itself.
The final cost for installations without an existing box varies depending on the ceiling height, attic access, and how much wire must be fished through finished walls and ceilings. A site assessment by a licensed electrical contractor will provide an accurate quote.
In Ontario, electrical wiring work — including running new circuits or adding wiring to an existing circuit — must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor or master electrician. This is required under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and the Electricity Act. Only a licensed contractor can legally pull the required ESA permit for wiring work.
Ceiling fan replacement on an existing fan-rated box with no new wiring may not require a permit in every case, but any job that involves new wiring, a new ceiling box, or a new switch circuit requires an ESA permit and inspection.
If new wiring is involved — running wire from a panel or junction box to the ceiling location, adding a switch, or installing a new dedicated circuit — an ESA permit is required under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The ESA will inspect the work after completion.
Always confirm with your contractor whether a permit is required for your specific installation. A licensed electrical contractor will assess the scope and handle the permit process if needed.
